The Site Analysis and Conceptual Proposal

This work was done as part of the "Site Planning Online" course from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Some time ago, I became very keen on urban studies, extensive research, analyzing the territory and have started  to learn GIS and gradually integrate it in my daily life and working projects. Memorial Drive has become for me a kind of starting point or "field" for various experiments with programs and tools. So, finally, I would like to share my experience.The site (about 5.5 acres) is located in Massachusetts, near the Charles River and surrounded from one side by picturesque waterfront with very well organized open recreation space and quite dense privet residential area + the foreground of the road mostly represents by variety of commercial usage and plenty of them are underutilized. Another an important note, that Memorial Drive connects MIT and Harvard University.

Actually, the main issues were the analysis of the territory and the search for new conceptual functional schemes. As part of the discussion, I looked at the main aspects of the theoretical process, but I was extremely attracted to the topic that I also considered in detail the tools that were mentioned in the course in order to choose the one that was more convenient for me, as well as to cover their features in general. To a greater extent, I met on Rhino + Grasshopper (Ladybug, Heron, Eddy3d), ArcGIS, QGIS + depended quite strongly on the peculiarities of working with the original GIS data.

This experience has been incredibly useful, and I hope to integrate it into GIS work as often as possible. However, at the same time, the base of the same Massachusetts is just a dream compared to many other locations. After completing this course, I even have started to collect resources about availability and publicity of GIS data around the world. The map is updated all the time and in parallel for myself I maintain a database of useful links by country.

To a greater extent, I focused on the analysis of the territory, since I had many personal tasks for this block, but this course also included the development of a program and the concept of territory development. So, based on site analysis results, I made a conceptual proposal.

Having studied the main problems of the territory, the most striking thing is the lack of territories for the experiments of students and graduates. There is also a shortage of housing units and their high cost. Therefore, it is very important to minimize construction costs and try to organize a vibrant place that will attract investors and be very flexible for further development.

In my mind this place could become an ideal area for a start-up site, and the existing structure of the building can be taken as a basis and sea containers can be used inside, as they themselves represent an independent design module, with which it is very easy to organize the interior space. The same container modules can become the basis of a small retail zone, something like a temporary market. In general, the concept provides for the preservation of many existing structures and their renovation. Also on the territory, there is a small residential block which can provide temporary accommodation for students or start-ups.

P.S. Thank you very much for your attention! To be honest, this topic attracts me a lot, and I would like to continue developing this knowledge. I look forward to any kind of collaboration or research in this area. At the moment, I'm also planning seriously study Python, since as I see now that GIS very often involves a lot of non-standard solutions that cannot be performed by basic tools.
