Nestled along the Ob River, Riverfront Park introduces a dynamic public space in Novosibirsk, Russia. This development is part of the European Riverfront, a comprehensive redevelopment initiative led by Brusnika. Designed by KCAP Architects & Planners, the master plan integrates pedestrian and cycling routes into the riverfront park, connecting several river-adjacent plots and the river station park to create a wildlife corridor in the city center.

The landscape architects faced the challenge of linking fragmented housing estates into a continuous route with river access for both residents and visitors. This project, a collaboration among three landscape firms — Russia’s AFA and Landmark Architects, and Poland’s S&P Architektura Krajobrazu — aims to evenly distribute various functions throughout the park, attracting a diverse range of users, including adults, children, teens, athletes, and cyclists. The riverfront project consists of four phases, with a 600-meter stretch connecting five houses already completed.

A cycling path runs along the riverbank, linking internal estate streets and integrating the riverfront with the surrounding urban environment. The natural terrain divides the riverbank into three tiers, ascending to adjacent houses, with staircases, lanes, and ramps providing access to the river. The riverfront park spans 25 meters in width. Constructed from water-resistant larch, the lowest deck of the riverbank was reinforced with boulders to manage water levels before landscaping began. This deck becomes usable again when the water recedes in late spring.

Beyond its urban concrete staircases, the riverfront is envisioned as a wildlife park, boasting lush, layered greenery with over 50 plant species, including mature trees, shrubs, grasses, and perennials. These plants were chosen to enhance the landscape’s appeal year-round, showcasing colorful foliage in autumn, blooming perennials in summer, and conifers and evergreens in winter. Perennial borders ensure continuous summer flowering along pedestrian paths. Feeders attract insects and birds, fostering biodiversity. The water ecosystem is supported by water-tolerant plants like irises, reeds, and cattails. River forecasting models guided plant selection, with hydrophytes promoting microorganism and fish health. Coconut matting stimulates root growth, with plants placed underwater for nourishment.

A significant portion of Riverfront Park serves as a recreational haven, offering lawns for picnics, yoga, and beach volleyball, green alleys for leisurely strolls, benches, and wooden decks for relaxing and enjoying river views. Activity zones, situated in public squares with piers and vantage points, vary in character from sports to recreational, each connecting to the housing estate’s inner streets.

The sports square includes play courts, table tennis, and outdoor fitness areas, while children’s playgrounds feature climbing frames, swings, slides, and a rock-climbing wall, catering to both young children and teenagers. Themed areas offer diverse experiences, such as a giant sturgeon for climbing and hiding, a water play area with educational equipment, and a playground with musical instruments. This variety is intentional, based on joint research by Brusnika and AFA, focusing on movement, play, experimentation, communication, recreation, nature exposure, and risk-taking, all reflected in the park’s play zones.

The new park in the European Riverfront estate combines urban recreation with a natural forest setting by the water. Unlike typical city parks, which are limited in space and functionality due to high land costs, this park spreads its features evenly, akin to a countryside setting, offering a seamless blend of activities that entertain visitors along the route. This public space, accessible to everyone, has quickly become a major attraction. Retail and household amenities on the ground floors of river-facing buildings add vibrancy, and the water zone offers various water activities, with SUP surfing and instructional lessons already available.
