Dome, the latest addition to Desa Potato Head in Bali, presents a captivating fusion of forward-thinking design and organic elements. This innovative dining space, born from a collaboration between Potato Head Design Studio and OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), draws inspiration from traditional Balinese cisterns while embracing contemporary aesthetics.
The architectural concept pays homage to Bali’s rich cultural heritage, with the design echoing the form and purpose of historical water storage structures. This nod to tradition is skilfully balanced with a modern approach, creating a space that feels both grounded and progressive.
David Gianotten, Architect and OMA Managing Partner, shares, “The Dome is an all-day restaurant where connections are nurtured, work is done, and low-threshold events take place. The immersive atmosphere of the Dome allows visitors to fully engage with each other and form new connections.”
Sustainability is a cornerstone of Dome’s design, aligning with Desa Potato Head’s eco-conscious practices. The culinary approach mirrors its design philosophy. Chef Diego Recarte’s menu showcases locally sourced ingredients, supporting Balinese farmers and producers. The focus on natural and biodynamic wines complements the sustainable food offerings.
Isaac Larose, Creative Director, explains the intentional blend of modern and natural elements: “The architecture is so futuristic, so we wanted to break it down with natural elements. If you look closely, you can see the imperfections in the shades of the reclaimed furniture. We decided to celebrate these imperfections rather than hide them, just like we do with our wines and produce.”
The layout encourages community interaction, featuring a central communal area beneath a striking skylight. This design choice promotes social engagement and aligns with Desa Potato Head’s ethos of connection and creativity. A curated book selection by Wildlife Archive adds an intellectual dimension to the space.
Unique audiovisual elements enhance the Dome’s atmosphere. Vintage JBL speaker stacks and vinyl DJ sets create an engaging ambience, and custom-designed fixtures and furniture contribute to the space’s distinctive character.
Beyond its role as a restaurant, Dome actively participates in Desa Potato Head’s sustainability initiatives. The space implements waste reduction strategies and supports the Sweet Potato Project for the kids. Educational workshops and cultural programs hosted at Dome further its commitment to community engagement and environmental responsibility.
Larose encapsulates the vision for Dome: “We wanted the space to be inviting, a place for connecting with like-minded individuals, and to be inspired by all the reference material around you.”
