Architect:Reservoir A - Architecture + Urbanism
Location:1, 3 and 5 Boulevard Jacques Bertrand, 6000 Charleroi, Belgium; | ;View Map
Project Year:2024
Category:Cultural Centres
RESERVOIR A renovated and transformed a former school in conjunction with the metamorphosis of the Carolo cultural centre in Charleroi.
The transformation and enlargement brief of the Eden unfolded in several phases beginning in 2012. The architects seized this opportunity to renovate and to implement the necessary energy compliance upgrades, in order to develop a tool up to the challenges launched by its director, Fabrice Laurent.
The renewal of the cultural project is supported by unostentatious architecture and flexible spaces that have been restored to their former dimensions, thereby affirming a new identity in the public space. The treatment of materials and textures celebrate the history and the identity of the preexisting building by privileging creative reuse rather than demolition or a major overhaul.
A courtyard in the interior was installed at the intersection of the buildings. In 2018, the Eden called upon the firm Carbonifère to plant this courtyard with greenery, after which it swiftly became known as the garden of Eden.
