It’s been an enlightening journey since PTW Architects started to work on the transformation of The Revy, one of Pyrmont’s longest standing Grade One listed waterfront landmarks.

The REVY is a heritage listed 1912 waterfront landmark originally designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, an English architect who migrated to Australia and became the New South Wales Government Architect. It is the largest royal navy victualling yard in the Southern Hemisphere — the Royal Edward Victualling Yard. It holds significant symbolic and commemorative importance for the activities of Commonwealth naval forces in the Southern Hemisphere and subsequent economic development, and it is listed as a cultural heritage site.

The eight storey Royal Edward Victualling Yard, Building C (The Revy), now comprises 44 residences, including two-storey townhouses which sit within the rusticated basalt base, with double height spaces allowing full appreciation of the original volumes. The two new external glass cores are placed on Darling Island Road, while the waterfront façade remains largely unaltered but for small, delicate insertions. Previously fenced-off, the site now has a publicly accessible boardwalk.

New elements were to be ‘read’ as modern to allow a clear interpretation of the original building fabric. This approach informed both the macro and micro scale of the design resolution of this narrow, vertical brick waterfront building. Collaborating closely with consultant team, PTW designed new openings and new cantilevered balconies to the all facades that needed to be sympathetic to the original design, responding to the existing pattern of the brick facades.

The brickwork walls are without a cavity and during the demolition for the new openings it was observed that there were numerous cavities within the wall through which water could pass. All brickwork walls were repointed in a two-stage process to ensure a deeper penetration of mortar into the wall. Damaged brickwork to the facades was identified and replaced with salvaged bricks or patched to match, while former steel embedments from the fire stair were removed and bricked over.

The waterfront façade remains largely unaltered other than discrete and delicate new window and balcony insertions. Two new vertical glazed lift and fire stair towers on the easterly street façade are clearly modern additions, yet still retain glimpses and reflections of the red brick facade behind.

The adaptive re-use of the existing structure and fabric brought many sustainability and cost benefits, including the brick façade, central stairs, and the distinctive bluestone basement walls. Internally, new wall and ceiling linings associated with the apartment fitouts have been pulled away from the external walls to retain evidence of the buildings’ construction. All apartments receive sunlight to living areas and are cross ventilated naturally. Roof top water tanks and recycling provisions enable re-use in gardens across the property. Previously fenced-off, the site has slowly morphed into a publicly accessible boardwalk with a significantly enhanced the public realm connecting Darling Island with Pyrmont Bay and Jones Bay Wharf.

The project also won the 2023 Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Awards - Adaptive Reuse Development and received a Finalist recognition in the 2023 ULI Asia Pacific Awards for Excellence. PTW's adaptive transformation of the majestic red brick building perfectly embodies a harmonious coexistence with the past, offering a richly textured modern lifestyle. This undoubtedly sets a benchmark for value enhancement in the industry.
