Addleshaw Goddard Junglette 花园丨英国伦敦丨Mike McMahon 工作室

The Garden won a prestigious Gold Award at the RHS Chelsea Flower show and was one of three garden chosen for a visit by the King due to his passion for sustainability, a theme which runs through the design. The garden was both designed and constructed by Mike McMahon Studio.

Inspired by our own balconies of King’s Cross, London, our design endeavours to spotlight the untapped potential of compact outdoor spaces. In urban landscapes, barren balconies and terraces are ubiquitous. In them, we see enormous potential to be transformed into vibrant green havens. Our balcony design not only creates a tranquil sanctuary but also serves as a shield against the ceaseless urban bustle, contributing to an enhanced sense of wellbeing for residents.

热带植物的爆炸生长体现了丛林的四个结构层次：挺水植物（即植物的根、根茎生长在水的底泥之中，茎、叶挺出水面），伞盖植物，下层植物和雨林植物。这些植物包括一些外来植物，如南极迪桑花、桫椤、芸苔和大叶女贞，以及一些较为常见的植物，如金莲花。

An explosion of hardy tropical planting mirrors the four structural layers of the jungle: the emergent, canopy, understory, and forest floor. These plants include exotics such as Dicksonia Antarctica, Cyathea Cooperi, Brassiopsis Mitis and Cannas mixed with more common plants such as Nasturtiums.

Nestled within, a seating area is cocooned by cascading flora, evoking the splendor of a colossal hanging basket. Our plant selection is a tribute to our global jungle adventures and Jewlsy’s ancestral home in Kerala, India.

A striking folded back wall, crafted from 1,492 recycled paper assembled like a 3D jigsaw, echoes the jungle’s strata, infusing the space with depth. The chairs “Unfurl Paper” are inspired by the unfurling of fern fronds and are designed and made in-house by our studio, Mike McMahon Studio. Light weight fabric containers by BacSac provide a simple way to lower the weight of the balcony and allow the weight to be used for planting instead.

The garden promotes biodiversity with bird nests, integrated bat boxes in the back wall and a small pond. The art of geometry threads seamlessly through the garden’s design, harmonizing nature with aesthetics, creating an imaginative and impactful space of unparalleled quality.

Sustainability is a key tenet of our design ethos. The recycled paper crafted into the durable back wall, decking, and furniture is testament to our commitment to circularity. Post-event, the oval-shaped decking will be transformed into dining and coffee tables, ensuring a prolonged, multi-faceted life and the garden will be relocated to a new home. The garden has now been relocated to Rock Trust Charity in Edinburgh where Mike & Jewlsy set out and planted the new garden with volunteers from Addleshaw Goddard and Rock Trust.
