The hiking and cross-country skiing paradise Knottenried - Diepolz, located above Immenstadt in the Allgäu region, is an outstanding example of the successful integration of tourist infrastructure into a highly sensitive natural landscape. The parking lot there serves as an ideal starting point for hikes in the summer, such as on the Kuhnigundenweg of the Mountain Farming Museum. In winter, however, the parking lot transforms into a hub for cross-country skiing tours. The trails around this empathetic district were newly measured and signposted in 2020. In cooperation with the German Ski Association, this led to the creation of the newly classified "DSV Nordic Active Center."

The designed longitudinal structure with a gabled roof is oriented towards the traditional architecture of the region and integrates sensitively into the landscape. Clad with natural materials, the building cleverly houses functions such as garages, storage areas, a fueling station, and a public restroom. The clear structuring and thoughtful spatial arrangement ensure efficient use of the building without compromising its external appearance.

To ensure the storage, maintenance, and servicing of the entire trail and hiking network, the construction of a suitable building complex was necessary. Given the untouched and highly sensitive landscape zone, the developers and responsible authorities placed great emphasis on a simple, unobtrusive, yet traditional design.

The traditional approach in the architectural execution of this building complex enables a minimally invasive presence in the surroundings that meets both functional and aesthetic high standards. This creates a harmonious overall image that respects the natural beauty of the environment while providing the necessary infrastructure for the operation of the trails and winter paths.
