Wu Shu is a restaurant specializing in Northern Chinese cuisine. We approached the design of this interior with a fair amount of irony: on one hand, it’s a classic colonial Chinese interior with a strong influence of chinoiserie. You’ll find classic Chinese fabrics, decor elements with intricate patterns, and plenty of dark wood furniture. On the other hand, there are many playful details in the interior: seamless red floors, intentionally “Chinese” partitions with ornamental designs that serve various functions – they act as shelves, decorative panels, and even a large illuminated wall that connects two dining areas.
The restroom is deliberately distinct from the rest of the interior – it’s bright, contrasting, yet still very “Chinese.” The finish includes humorous tiles featuring cats and guns, and the fixtures are styled to resemble traditional Chinese designs.
Many elements of this interior were sourced from flea markets and second-hand shops, so the restaurant doesn’t have a modern look. We aimed to avoid both glossiness and complete minimalism.
