Almost two years after opening up shop in Melbourne‘s tony Armadale area, an event we’ve covered in a previous post, sustainable Australian fashion brand bassike is further raising its profile in the Victorian capital with a downtown retail space. The store occupies a ground floor unit at QV Melbourne, a popular shopping precinct in the heart of the city, rubbing shoulders with the boutiques of leading fashion peers, such as Incu, A.P.C., Assembly, Carhartt W.I.P. and Marais. The retail space features an interior design of Sydney-based design practice Akin Atelier, and represents a new direction for the brand with some new materials that align with its strong commitment to responsible business. The material palette includes natural brick cast slabs as bench tops for the display tables and the bricks being used in the shopfront and brick screens throughout the retail space.

Mind you, they’re all handcrafted and constructed from recycled building and deconstruction materials. Additionally, recyclable FRP sheets, with offcuts incorporated into the cast slabs, have been used, which form part of the structure of the display tables. The same material, but in a green hue, is inventively captured by screens, walls, shelving and table bases. Adding visual spice to the setting is a curated selection of furnishings, such as a vintage glass feature wall light from TIGMI, an Armadillo hand-knotted Afghan wool rug, a table by Henry Wilson, and last but not least, a pair of mid-century 1970s armchairs by Giuseppe Munari, crafted with chromed steel frames and newly reupholstered in a green velvet which effortlessly corresponds with the aforementioned sheets.
