The construction of the Jingchu Intangible Cultural Heritage Park spanned six years, from the first to the fourth phase. It evolved from the initial project of Chu-style lacquerware decoration to a demonstration and heritage base that now includes a variety of intangible cultural heritage projects, such as Chu-style zither making, eagle kite crafting, freshwater shell carving, Chu embroidery, Yingcheng pottery, Chu bamboo slip production, mortise and tenon joinery, and wood carving (hereinafter referred to as the Heritage Park). The project covers an area of 32,000 square meters, with a planned total construction area of 32,800 square meters, divided into five phases according to the construction sequence. Four stages have been completed, covering approximately 12,900 square meters. The architectural appearance has continually evolved and blended different styles, yet the spatial experience and the atmosphere remain rich and unified.

Beginnings and prototypes
Lacquerware craftsmanship, as the main project of the Heritage Park, was chosen as the primary exhibition content for the park’s first phase. A garden-style entrance was created adjacent to the Art High School. The Heritage Park narrative is introduced through the corridor and the entrance water feature, beginning with an artistic lacquer tree installation.

Growth and Integration
In the construction of the second phase of the Heritage Park, we focused primarily on ‘growth’ and ‘integration’ to incorporate new elements, including the Master-Apprentice Square for inheritors, new workshops, and courtyard spaces. The combination of courtyards forms a two-entry, three-span courtyard layout, reflecting the growth of the structure. By integrating the diverse characteristics of traditional dwellings from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, we aim to echo the core spirit of harmony in diversity that underlies the various intangible cultural heritage elements in the park.

Reversal and Reconstruction
During the six years from the first to the fourth phase of construction, the continuous expansion of the Heritage Park brought functional changes that also altered the flow of the park—the need for direct public access led to a second entrance. We designed the entrance facing the campus to be more restrained and refined, while the entrance facing the city features an open and inclusive plaza layout. Overall, a circular route for visitors is created through corridors, winding paths, and walkways. Although the Heritage Park developed two entrances due to the construction schedule, it does not affect the visitor experience, and the park’s visiting routes remain clear and straightforward.

Aggregation and Dispersion
Building upon the Heritage Park’s existing courtyards, the project’s fourth phase created small plazas and courtyard spaces in front of and behind the Jinghe Theater. Unlike the traditional layout, the theater breaks down auxiliary functions such as exhibition halls, dressing rooms, and restrooms into smaller structures scattered around the front and back, forming new courtyards and pathways that integrate seamlessly into the existing layout.

Premeditation and contingency of space
During the six years of construction, we built new structures and renovated existing spaces based on the evolving functional needs of the earlier buildings.

Material’s simplicity and patina
In a narrative space, the sense of history is key to the overall atmosphere of the architectural narrative. The Heritage Park primarily uses materials such as blue bricks, concrete, tiles, and pebbles, which are simple and unadorned. Regarding spatial decoration, we incorporate traditional elements like partition windows, decorative windows, moon gates, pathways made from old millstones, and stone stumps beside the corridors. These traditional materials and elements help to immerse the space in a historical ambiance.

Mixing and collaging of forms
We relocated an abandoned old stilt house from the remote mountains of Enshi and transformed it into spaces such as an intangible cultural heritage workshop and rest pavilion. The structure was reconfigured through renovation, blending modern materials with traditional wooden frameworks. The interplay of new and old materials creates a novel and engaging spatial experience for visitors.

The zither hall within the zither workshop, shaped like a secluded valley, was inspired by a cave performance experience mentioned during discussions between the zither master and the designer. The hall’s design mimics the form of a cave constructed from aged concrete with a large skylight at the top to bring in natural light. The space is serene and elegant, reflecting the qualities of the zither—tranquil and profound. Seated within, both the zither master and visitors, though having unique experiences, share a familiar cave-inspired zither experience.

New form of cultural architecture
Since its completion, the Jingzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Park has become a representative model project for intangible cultural heritage in Jingzhou. The park features Chu-style lacquerware decoration techniques and conducts regular research and training activities in collaboration with the National Traditional Craft Workstation established with Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts and Design. Numerous competitions and events attract international and domestic lacquer art practitioners and intangible cultural heritage enthusiasts for learning and interaction each year.

The public has expressed high recognition for the Intangible Cultural Heritage Park’s excellent infrastructure, rich traditional cultural atmosphere, and distinctive intangible cultural heritage characteristics. In this architectural practice, we have found a similar inheritance path in intangible cultural heritage building design. The preservation of traditional culture is not about symbols or is limited to styles; instead, it is reflected in the cultural meaning and ambiance of the architecture and environment and the response to life.
