In a debut project that’s turning heads, Tabitha Isobel has breathed new life into an end-of-terrace Victorian townhouse in London’s Islington. The five-storey residence, once stripped of its character by a developer, has been injected with thoughtful design that marries historical respect with forward-thinking aesthetics.

Tabitha Isobel, founded in February 2023 by Tabitha Organ after a decade of working in studios including Conran + Partners and Sella Concept, approached this renovation with a clear vision. The concept, playfully titled “Back to the Future,” aimed to create a cohesive design that respected the building’s Victorian heritage while introducing fresh, innovative elements. The design principles were threefold: a confident and timeless backdrop; unique and tactile touch points; and elements that are outspoken and loud.

The exterior renovation set the tone for the project. A bespoke front door, reminiscent of a castle entrance, adds a quirky yet respectful nod to the building’s history. Inside, the lower ground floor has been transformed into a members’ lounge-style space, complete with a cinema room and DJ area. Rich textures and moody colours create an enveloping atmosphere that transcends time.

Rather than completely overhauling the recently installed kitchen, Tabitha took a sustainable approach. New bespoke Pear Green tulip-wood veneered doors were fitted to existing carcasses, complemented by chunky chrome handles. The addition of a breakfast nook with banquette seating maximizes the light-filled corner space.

The open-plan living and dining area is anchored by a Verde Guaco Green Marble Fireplace, with a bespoke oak and metal TV box serving as functional art. A mix of vintage and contemporary furniture pieces creates a dynamic energy, with chrome accents tying the space together.

The first-floor master suite underwent a significant reconfiguration. A new layout now includes a generous walk-through wardrobe leading to a spacious en-suite. The bedroom itself is a study in complementary colours, with vibrant blues playing off chocolate, mushroom, and caramel tones.

“This project is a project of firsts,” says Tabitha. “The highlight was working with such an open-minded and adventurous client, which enabled us to push ideas further and be bolder when making design decisions.”

The designer’s approach to combining vintage and contemporary pieces is evident throughout the house. “I love to combine vintage and antique furniture with new contemporary pieces. However, the balance is important, and I like to find the equilibrium,” she concludes.

This Islington townhouse renovation showcases Tabitha Isobel’s commitment to creating spaces that honour history while embracing modern living. It’s a promising debut that signals exciting things to come from this young studio.
