The Taizicheng Archaeological Site was uncovered in 2017 during the excavations for the construction of the 2022 Winter Olympic Village in Chongli. After the archaeological excavation, THAD Team made substantial adjustments of the overall design’ s control rules for protecting the integrity of the site. According to the planning and implementation program for the protection, display and utilization of this site, the ruins of Taizicheng and its surrounding historical environment had thus been able to achieve the overall protection in situ.
Identified as a seasonal royal palace site of the middle and late Jin Dynasty (1161-1234), the Taizicheng Site was the first archaeological excavation of the Jin Dynasty’s palace sites which second only to Jin Dynasty’s capital city. The site was selected as the "2018 National Top Ten Archaeological New Discoveries" in March 2019, and also registered as "Officially Protected Site of National Importance" in October.
Our team is trying to build the Taizicheng Archaeological Site into a first-class national archaeological park and a Winter Olympic square with rich Chinese cultural connotations. This project would become a new model for the combination of cultural heritage protection and the Winter Olympics, furthermore showing the charm of outstanding Chinese traditional culture and achievements of heritage conservation to the world.
The important nodes of the heritage park emphasized the Taizicheng ruins’ city pattern with double city walls, the north-south central axis, and the L-shaped streamline during Olympic match time. The ruins included: Archaeological Site of the East, South and West Walls; Archaeological Site of the South Gate and Barbican; Archaeological Site of Building No.9; Archaeological Sites of No.1, 2 and 3 Groups of Buildings; As well as Protective Shelter for the Western Courtyard Archaeological Site with the richest remains.
