MISKOLCTAPOLCA PARK
Miskolc, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén region, Hungary
Building on the heritage that forms the physical and spiritual core of the park, the renewal is designed to meet the needs of diverse age groups and social demographics through the expansion and upgrading of functions and infrastructure. The park seamlessly blends traditional and modern elements, providing spaces for both active and passive leisure.
A key design objective was to highlight the existing natural and cultural heritage assets, creating a cohesive yet distinctive park identity through the thoughtful use of enclosures, furniture, and information systems, while preserving the functional diversity of the different park areas.
The park's existing focal points, the central plaza in front of the Cave Baths and the boat lake are connected via the Barabits Promenade and its extension. This layout defines the main circulation routes and the basic spatial structure of the park. The Barabits Promenade, designed as the primary access route, leads visitors to the park and the internationally renowned cave baths. As a linear public space, the promenade accommodates new features that enrich the park's recreational and tourism offerings, while providing a unified visual identity for operational facilities.
The design of the distribution space in front of the Cave Baths allows for smooth movement and ample waiting areas. The irregular paving pattern enhances the space's unique character, avoiding visual and spatial conflicts with access roads and irregular geometries. The Lake Walkway provides a straight, unobstructed connection between the Main Square in front of the Cave Baths and the Lookout Square by the boating lake, ensuring seamless physical and visual integration. The transformation of the Lookout Square into a community space offers views of the fountain and lake, while also serving as a recreational area with benches for relaxation and sunbathing, complemented by water play features from the fountain's jets.
The western side of the planning area, located outside the inner protection zone of the waterworks' 20-day access area, functions as a water source protection zone. Themed play elements depicting local birdlife have been installed near the Barabits Walk. Benches and tables are strategically placed along the organically designed pathways, maintaining the park's natural ambiance.
Bespoke interpretive trail signs are placed throughout the park to highlight valuable mature trees, the park's history, and its wildlife. Additionally, custom plant panels showcase newly planted shrubs and perennial species.
