From April and May 2024, the fifth anniversary retrospective exhibition celebrating the construction achievements of Dongguan’s central urban area, titled “Urban Magnetic Field,” was hosted at the Aroma Alley lawn. The exhibition installation design was carried out by Daxing Jizi Design.

Over the past five years, Dongguan’s central area has undergone refreshing and remarkable changes. This transformation stems from an extraordinary, high-standard urban planning and construction initiative, driven by Dongguan’s “Strengthening the Core” strategy. This strategy highlights the central area as a driving force, empowering the entire city and fueling its transformation and upgrading. As a showcase of these phased construction achievements, the exhibition is distinctly different from conventional urban planning displays from the outset of the design process. Its target audience spans all age groups, aiming to translate the city’s strategic vision into tangible, enriched everyday spatial experiences that people can directly perceive.

After careful consideration, we developed a design strategy to transform the exhibition space into an integrated installation. This space not only serves as a carrier for the exhibition content but also as an interface for public interaction, presenting a cohesive spatial experience. The design aligns with the theme of “Urban Magnetic Field,” translating the official planning language of “Strengthening the Core” into the force of a magnetic field—a dynamic and highly attractive place that draws everything toward its center. Through lightweight and lively design, we create interactive scenes infused with a sense of playfulness, dissolving the distance often associated with grand urban narratives and fostering an environment that is friendly, open, and welcoming to all.

The exhibition venue is located on the outdoor lawn of Aroma Alley in Dongguan’s central area. This temporary exhibition transforms the urban space into a larger stage, resonating with the surrounding construction sites and directly showcasing the scope and achievements of the central area’s development. However, placing the exhibition in a vast lawn of over ten thousand square meters presents certain challenges: the space must extend to a considerable area and height to integrate with the city’s grand scale; it must also adapt to the day-night cycle in an outdoor environment and accommodate the humid and rainy climate of southern summers; additionally, it must be environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and easy to assemble, disassemble, and restore to the lawn’s original state.

During our design research of Dongguan’s streets and alleys, we noticed a commonly found everyday item in the city—plastic baskets. For many years, Dongguan has been renowned for its manufacturing industry, and these baskets are a reflection of the city’s mature plastic industry. They are sturdy, durable, and cost-effective, widely used for the storage and transportation of various goods. Moreover, they embody the vibrant life of the local community, reflecting the diligent and pragmatic spirit of this city.

Daxing Jizi has consistently explored modular construction practices that adapt to local environments and conditions, aiming for targeted and economical solutions. The lightweight, flexible, waterproof, and pressure-resistant plastic baskets serve as potential modular units for large-scale outdoor installations. Their stability, durability, and recyclability enable 100% recovery and reuse after the exhibition. This familiar everyday material is innovatively reinterpreted to create an unfamiliar and novel “pixel city” with a strong surreal quality. This approach not only pays homage to the city’s industrial foundation and daily life but also aligns with Dongguan’s development into an innovative city.

Construction: The Spatial Interpretation of the Magnetic Field
Over two thousand locally manufactured plastic baskets emerge from the grass, converging from points to surfaces, akin to the accumulation of bricks and tiles throughout the city’s development. They evoke a sense of fun and imagination, reminiscent of playing with building blocks. Curved walls, 类似于 planetary orbits, rise and fall around the center, forming this “magnetic field,” which spans over 1,200 square meters. The semi-enclosed design of the walls blurs the boundaries of the space, and the varying heights from center to edge extend the experience into the surrounding urban environment.

Each plastic basket measures 560 x 380 x 300 mm, with yellow and green colors that evoke the vibrant feelings of growth during summer, remaining bright and cheerful in both sunny and rainy weather. The modular construction method is flexible and efficient, fully utilizing the characteristics of the material; it is also highly adaptable, allowing for on-site adjustments. The basket modules gradually evolve into columns, exhibition walls, public activity platforms, play spaces, and public furniture, creating micro-environments and small communities within the larger framework of the “magnetic field.”

The undulating circular exhibition walls provide ample display surfaces. The curatorial narrative unfolds around the installation space, connecting the relationship between urban development and its inhabitants. Instead of a standard exhibition route, the space conveys a sense of openness, inviting visitors to explore and engage with the stories of the city’s transformation as they roam.

The exhibition walls feature doorways and windows of varying sizes and shapes, creating a permeable and dynamic sense of layering. Four of the windows incorporate climbable steel slides, transforming the exhibition space into an engaging playground that stimulates children’s curiosity to explore physically.

The public activity space and the curvilinear “urban furniture” surrounding the magnetic field were constructed with the principle of not uprooting any small trees, harmoniously and organically integrating into the existing environment. Thicker plastic baskets are stacked around a lush maple tree, creating a platform that serves as a relaxed and enjoyable temporary resting place in the shade, as well as a venue for various small cultural events throughout the exhibition period.

Some of the plastic baskets scattered across the ground are not fixed, giving the exhibition installation a dynamic and “unfinished” quality, suggesting that “everyone can contribute to change.” From the creativity of the planners to the construction by workers, and finally to the interactions and feedback from citizens, this exhibition encourages widespread participation. It transforms urban planning, often a top-down professional endeavor, into an event that invites everyone to actively engage, explore, and co-create a public space.

Resilience, Vitality, and Reuse
In the week following the exhibition’s opening, rare strong convective weather brought continuous heavy rain, turning the lawn into a muddy landscape filled with puddles. While the rain caused some inconvenience for visitors, the exhibition space unexpectedly transformed into a more playful scene. Citizens strolled through the “magnetic field” in sandals or rain boots, while children frolicked among the installations, “suddenly stepping into a fun mud puddle.” The adaptability of this temporary space resonated with the enthusiasm and vitality of the community, allowing us to glimpse the city’s resilience and positive energy.

The “Basket Reuse Project” in the final week of the exhibition attracted significant attention and participation. Citizens shared their insights about the changes in the central area while receiving baskets taken from the installation. As this temporary magnetic field space disassembles, each particle returns to daily life or industrial usage, continuing to exert its pull in personalized ways. Meanwhile, the “Dongguan” pixel wall at the center of the installation will be preserved and displayed at the Dongguan Planning Exhibition Hall, continuously witnessing the city’s future transformations.

Urban development is not just about spatial strategies; it is fundamentally rooted in practical action that allows citizens to live and work comfortably, ultimately attracting more people to the city. The exhibition serves as a form of mobilization, generating appeal from an unconventional space that inspires citizen participation and creativity. This engagement becomes a vibrant shared memory in the story of the city’s evolution.
