In the bustling city of Chongqing, a renowned noodle chain with over 1,000 locations has taken a bold step to revitalise its brand image.
Situated in one of the alleys of Eighteen Stairs, a tourist hotspot known for its 200+ steps connecting the city’s upper and lower districts, this project breathes new life into a space steeped in history. The area, Chongqing’s earliest residential settlement, was commercially retrofitted in 2021 while preserving its original charm.
Office AIO, the architectural firm behind this transformation, has cleverly redefined the concept of a facade. By pushing the boundary inwards, they’ve created a semi-public area that serves multiple purposes—from delivery pick-ups to covered outdoor seating. The brand’s signature warm red colour adds a distinct spatial volume through the original dissected punch windows.
Taking cues from Chongqing’s rapid urbanisation in the 90s, the interior features full-height walls and two abstracted long communal tables. These elements, along with strategically placed mirrors, create a spatial experience reminiscent of the city’s surreal LiZiBa light rail station.
The design offers a bold, immersive dining experience that celebrates Chongqing’s unique cultural backdrop. By merging operational functionality with atmospheric design, Office AIO has created a space that not only attracts tourists but also serves as a vibrant community hub. This flagship store showcases the brand’s ability to move across all spectrums of scale, offering a unique menu and a refreshing casual dining setting.
