This project is located in Chaoyang District, Beijing, with a building area of 118 square meters. Although the original layout had a large public area, it also had significant wasted space, with the balcony in a neglected state. The primary lighting for the entire house comes from three tiered windows facing southeast, presenting both opportunities and challenges for renovation.

Amidst the rapid development of modern cities, the homeowner couple hoped their home would lean towards nature and authenticity, allowing their fast-paced lives to return to a state of calm and relaxation. Hence, the designer used two curved half-walls to create a sense of enclosure that fosters a warm home atmosphere, combined with half-height cabinets to separate functional areas. From the kitchen and bar area to the living room and study, the overall space is separated yet connected, enhancing the interaction among the residents. The entire space offers a relaxed and fluid sensory experience.

Coming home marks the beginning of a journey for the soul. The entrance foyer floor is paved with deep black, interlocking limestone, and as you step into the space, the warm wood tones begin to ease away your fatigue, gradually immersing you in a serene and cozy ambiance. The curved ceiling design echoes the half-walls on the ground, with its gentle and flowing form becoming the visual focal point of the space.

The kitchen incorporates textured stainless steel, which, against the backdrop of calm walnut wood, softens its otherwise cold demeanor. The kitchen’s lived-in feel captures the warmth of life, and in this “viewable” open kitchen, intersecting sightlines create picturesque framed views.

The homeowners, avid travelers, display their collected artifacts throughout the space, with memories from around the world solidifying into precious personal moments. Handcrafted artistic chairs, free from traditional aesthetics, with their unrefined beauty and the modern industrial feel of the stainless steel light fixtures above, create a vivid contrast.

To diminish the industrial feel of the apartment, the designer retained an exposed concrete structural beam during the renovation. This return to the original, unrefined quality, combined with the delicate Persian white marble, creates a serene and powerful expression in the space.

The designer cleverly transformed structural limitations into a unique design language. Around the U-shaped load-bearing wall in the living space, recycled red brick was used for tiling. The red brick niches combine storage and display functions and include a real fireplace, with an L-shaped sofa platform underneath for easy book browsing, integrating urban life into daily living.

The slightly mottled vintage red bricks, weathered by time, carry family memories. On ordinary nights, sitting around the fireplace with family, enjoying conversations and watching the flickering candlelight, time slows down and becomes tranquil.

The solid wall of the original study was opened up and replaced by a curved low wall. The desk extends from the low wall to the bay window, with clean and flowing lines guiding the user’s gaze towards the living space, allowing for interaction without interference.

To break the traditional concept of doors, we fused the idea of a door and a screen, hand-painting abstract geometric art on silver foil textures, with freehand strokes adding a personalized touch. Additionally, curved edges at various wall transitions help to eliminate the coldness of industrialization, presenting a tapestry of engaging details.

The meaning of home is no longer just a container for living. By constructing half-height blocks to reshape the space, we transform the interplay of light and shadow into captivating accompaniments. In the steel and concrete city, we create a cozy corner with gentle and dynamic curves, narrating the softness of life and providing a place for emotions to dwell.
