A rug is a surface that only appears to be two-dimensional; it uses refractions and colours to go beyond its shape. It has no volume, yet it is one of the few furnishings that has the ability to bring together the décor of any space. In a luxury hotel like The Emory Hotel in London, designed by Richard Rogers and Ivan Harbour of RSHP and inaugurated in May 2024 in Belgravia, an elegant neighborhood in Central London, Patricia Urquiola selected Warli rugs to enrich the hallways and suites for the third and fourth floors of this new location, which boasts 61 suites designed, every two floors, by a different designer.

In its eight rooms and central hallways, the Spanish-born designer managed to create a spatial sequence that unfolds from the entrance through the bathroom and living area, culminating in the bedroom. For the suites she designed, she selected the Mantra rugs designed by Paolo Zani, made of wool and viscose in custom colours. A subtly raised, soft, and continuous texture is achieved through the ‘loom-knotted’ technique, with flat-woven edges and fringes of different colours. The hand-crafted rugs feature complex and detailed motifs that perfectly complement the selected furnishings and wood panelling.

The corridors instead feature a ‘runner’ made with the Albers rug, also by Paolo Zani, paying homage to Anni and Josef, the creative Bauhaus couple who laid the foundations of modernism. Produced in a special ‘handloom’ version made of 100% fireproof wool, thanks to its motifs inspired by traditions and given a contemporary reinterpretation, it gives a sophisticated yet simple tone to the walkways and the idea of establishing a new standard where even luxury is a matter of discretion. Just like the hotel, which has an almost invisible entrance door. Guests access the hotel – with its striking ‘sail-like’ structure designed by RSHP – through a discreet courtyard at the end of a private alley.

Warli’s indoor rugs, made entirely by hand with various techniques (knotted, tufted, dhurries, or handloom) in countries with great textile traditions, are recognized for their subtle design (geometric or abstract) and high-quality materials (wool and yarns). A Warli rug tells the story of the design that inspired it, as well as the history and mastery of the artisans who produce it. The colours draw inspiration from the earth and nature, becoming the perfect element to harmonize with the décor.
