On an open plot of land in Majorca, Ca na Pau, a contemporary earthen house designed by local architecture firm Munarq, draws inspiration from traditional building methods while incorporating modern sustainability concepts. Earth, lime and stone form the main structure of the building, which not only reflects the importance of traditional building techniques and local resources, but also achieves the perfect integration of building materials with the surrounding natural environment, emphasizing the overall harmony of a sustainable environment.
BEAUTY OF BALANCE
A testament to the wonderful balance between human intelligence and natural beauty, the building has been carefully conceived by Munarq to adapt to the changing needs of the future, creating a place for people to relax, to gather, to reflect and to communicate.

The interplay between openness and closure creates a sense of community, but also a space for solitude and contemplation. Some voids not only outline the form of the surrounding landscape, but also allow natural light to freely enter the space to enhance the atmosphere of the space and create a dynamic interaction between the inside and outside.
These gaps create a secondary living area. Visually open, yet able to provide some much-needed privacy, this spatial dichotomy evokes individual memories of earlier roofless, weathered houses.
TRADITIONAL CRAFT
Ca na Pau is based on Ballast (a mix of aggregates, stones and lime of all sizes) - a local process practiced by Mallorca since the 1950s. Ballast, which acts as an interior partition, is 25cm thick and includes 10cm of wood fibre insulation and 20cm of local terracotta brick walls. Water resistance is achieved by laying permeable membranes between the two walls and ensuring the breathability of the envelope.
Permeable membranes play an important role in the project, both to ensure proper ventilation and to prevent moisture accumulation resulting in structural damage, the purpose of which is to ensure the durability of the building as a whole, as well as to create a healthy indoor environment. By blending traditional materials with modern craftsmanship, Munarq has enabled Ballasts wall system to strike a balance between functionality and sustainability, with respect for environmental and architectural principles.
SUSTAINABILITY
Ca na Pau is designed to reflect the rural lifestyle, exposing residents to open Spaces and elements of nature. The house is organized around a central courtyard with the same main roof, which acts as a transitional space between the interior and exterior, promoting the dynamic coordination of the interior and exterior environment and reproducing the essence of rural life.
In order to create a favorable heat and humidity environment in the humid environment, the interior walls were painted with a mixture of earth and lime. This traditional process not only helps to improve the thermal insulation performance of the building, but also improves the air quality inside by regulating the humidity. This initiative not only reduces energy consumption, but also reduces the risk of mold and condensation. In addition, the use of local materials is consistent with the principles of sustainable construction of the house, avoiding excessive environmental intervention and reducing costs.
STRAW ROOF
The roof is insulated using 35x40x80cm straw bales, which are placed between laminated wood beams. This design creates a tight and well-insulated layer with superior thermal properties to the 30cm exposed polystyrene. Straw not only has excellent thermal insulation properties and regulates room temperature, but it is also a natural renewable material that contributes to the practice of sustainable building.
At the same time, this natural insulation material also helps regulate humidity and permeability, which is essential for maintaining a healthy indoor environment. The use of straw is an environmentally friendly construction principle that reduces the dependence on synthetic materials and the impact of the building on the environment, helps to extend the service life of the building and promotes the sustainability of the building.
In the vast rural land, Ca na Pau is a special presence that perfectly embodies the character of its environment and is presented in an intuitive way while expressing its homage to nature and the environment.
