The Van Maerlantlyceum, a listed building from 1953 in Eindhoven, recently underwent a renovation by cepezed and cepezedinterieur, thoughtfully restoring its post-war architectural elements. Originally designed by Theo Taen as a “hall school” with a central gathering hall instead of long corridors, this innovative layout accommodated social interactions, reflecting the educational shift of the post-WWII era. The building featured rich decorations, like stained-glass windows by Albert Troost, and artworks, including a statue of Saint Catherine by Frans Fritschy. However, years of piecemeal renovations had altered its original structure, making a thorough update necessary to meet modern educational standards and restore its character.

In the recent renovation, sustainability and minimal demolition were prioritized. Non-monumental gymnasium façades were preserved, with new modular gym spaces added. A new ground-level entrance improves accessibility, leading to an atrium with wooden trusses and skylights. This new, open space connects the old building with a modern four-storey wing, creating a seamless flow through the structure. Cepezed restored the hall, highlighting its acoustics and artwork with LED lighting and movable wooden seating, reinforcing its function as a social hub.

The new atrium mirrors the hall’s architectural style, incorporating original exterior walls as part of the interior, including a half-round staircase leading to the media library. A subtle, modern aesthetic was achieved with colors inspired by the building’s murals and materials like wooden beams and white-coated steel. The new wing’s aluminum façade harmonizes with the original structure, creating an unobtrusive addition.

The renovation emphasized environmental sustainability, achieving standards for a Nearly Energy Neutral Building (BENG). Water retention systems, photovoltaic panels, and re-used materials like tiles and wood contributed to a low-impact design. Greenery was integrated beneath atrium skylights, connecting the interior to the nearby Dommel park. Existing basements now serve as bicycle storage, allowing more outdoor space for vegetation. Structural visibility in the new construction, like exposed wooden roofs and columns, reduces material use and speeds up future modifications.
