A new hospitality destination has arrived in Sydney’s Redfern, in the former home of The Sunshine Inn. Attenzione, the brainchild of a quartet of hospitality veterans, brings a dash of Europe to this vibrant neighbourhood.
The transformation of this existing space into Attenzione was a chance alignment of talent and opportunity. Madeleine and Taylor of Coffeyhallett explain: “Our involvement in this project began through a connection with a mutual friend, Christian Kalcic of KDE Group, who recommended us to the boys at Attenzione. After meeting with the owners on-site, everything fell into place seamlessly.”
The initial brief for Attenzione was quite different from the final result. The owners, including Felix Colman of Ragazzi and Fabbrica fame, initially envisioned a space with charcoal tones and draped fabrics. However, Coffeyhallett saw things differently: “We saw an opportunity to infuse the space with warmth and familiarity, and so we pivoted, proposing a bold, mustard-hued room that redefined the brief.”
With a tight three-week timeline from receiving the keys to opening night, the designers opted for a simple yet impactful approach that could be swiftly executed. Attenzione’s design is a harmonious fusion of inherited elements and fresh additions. The existing brick and timber detailing provide a canvas for new features like plush leather banquettes and a striking Murano chandelier. Chrome-dipped wall lights add a contemporary touch, while well-loved Thonet bistro chairs nod to classic European cafes.
The result is a space that feels both nostalgic and modern, reflecting the menu’s “Italian-ish” flair. As the designers note: “Our aim was to cultivate a local Italian bistro with a speakeasy vibe—unpretentious, warm, and always alive with energy.”
The name “Attenzione” itself carries a bit of a backstory, originating from an in-joke among the four partners. It refers to an Italian friend’s mother who would exclaim “Attenzione!” whenever a handsome potential suitor passed by during her visit to Sydney.
“What truly captivates us about this project is the seamless blend of elements that come together to create an inviting atmosphere—much like the owners embarking on their first culinary adventure together,” Coffeyhallett reflects.
From cosy Monday night dinners to lively celebrations, Attenzione adapts effortlessly, embodying the spirit of community that defines Redfern.
