How I Use AI to Turn Empty Spaces into Beautiful Interiors: Step-By-Step
Hello! My name is Ivana, and I own a company called AIC- AI Creative Interiors. I specialize in visualizing and updating empty and outdated spaces with different colors and interior design styles to make them feel fresh and inviting.
In this project, I'm excited to take you through the process of what I do at AICI and show you how I bring these spaces to life.
I've been working with Midjourney AI for about two and a half years now, pretty much since they started. I was immediately drawn to its unmatched aesthetic- there's truly nothing else like it.
However, for a long time, Midjourney didn't have the ability to do proper before-and-after transformations.
At that time, I wasn't able to upload an image to the software like you could with other before-and-after apps. Those apps were available, but their aesthetics were very inferior compared to what I wanted to achieve.
Everything changed just two weeks ago when Midjourney released a new editor for a select group of people, and I was lucky to get access.
Now, I can upload images and create truly beautiful updates of interiors- something I couldn't do quite like this before.
This project will take you through that journey, showing the magic of transforming empty or outdated spaces into something fresh and welcoming:
1. Each project begins with a good, well-lit photograph.
It's important to remember that the final result will only be as good as the original image provided.
In this example, I'm starting with a bright, open-plan kitchen, living room, and dining area- unfurnished, as you can see in the image below.
This is the image we'll be working with throughout the entire project, and I'll show you how I transform it step-by-step:
2. Interior Design Styles:
In the next phase of this project, I'm giving this open-plan living area a modern farmhouse look, which is one of my favorite styles.

We can try out any style we like to see how it fits our space.
For this example, I'm exploring a few different styles before we decide on the final design- testing out each one to see how the existing kitchen and flooring work with them:
3. Furnishing Phase
The next phase is all about furnishing the space.
I generally let Midjourney take the lead here, allowing it to explore different layouts.
In this phase, I'm not focusing on the colours just yet- that comes in the next stage, and will definitely change things a bit. For now, I want to see different furnishing options and how they could work within the space.
This part isn't easy. It's a lot of trial and error, because, as much as AI has evolved, it doesn't always get things right on the first try (or second!).
This can make it one of the more challenging stages, and it often takes quite a long time to achieve just the right look.
But that's part of the creative process, and when it finally clicks, it's incredibly rewarding:
4. Colouring Phase:
The next phase is my favourite- it's all about adding colour to the space.
Before Midjourney's new editor arrived, I created thousands of mood boards with different colors to use in my work. Personally, I've never been that confident in putting colours together, so discovering AI was a revelation. It has really helped me learn how to mix and match colours beautifully.
In my work, I either use my mood boards (or create specific mood boards for clients), or select colours that I think will enhance the interiors.
For this project, I'm using a mix of my colour and mood board inspirations, and the results are absolutely breath-taking.
This phase can be time-consuming- and, since this is a paid AI software, there's also a big financial and learning commitment- but the results are worth it.
The way the right colours bring a room to life is truly like nothing else, making the entire process so inspiring:
As we come to the end of this AIC exploration, I want to address some common misconceptions about working with AI:
Many people think that AI tools are free, and therefore expect my work to be free as well.
But the reality is that the AI software I use, like Midjourney, is very costly. You only get a few fast hours every month, and after that, I need to pay for additional time. It's a significant investment.
But beyond the cost, this work takes a lot of time and dedication.
The results don't just magically appear; I’ve spent countless hours- I've created over 50,000 images during my time with Midjourney - to learn, refine, and improve my skills.
It's an ongoing learning journey, and if I stop learning, my work would stop progressing too.
So, when you see these beautiful results, I hope you understand that they come from a lot of hard work, both in terms of financial and personal investment.
It's not easy, and it's certainly not free, but it's incredibly rewarding.
I hope this gives some insight into what goes on behind the scenes, and why the expectations of quick, free results simply aren't realistic.
Each project is a labour of love, and the effort that goes into them is what makes the final transformations so special.
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey of how I work at AIC as an AI interior design consultant.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of what I do, and what AI is (and isn’t).
