Traditional crafts in Japan are struggling under the pressures of changing times. As a result of an era that has long prioritized cheap, fast, and mass-production techniques, the demand for hand crafted goods has dropped drastically, raising concerns about their very survival. The invaluable skills, cultivated over many years, are disappearing one by one.

In the midst of this, on January 1st, 2024, a major earthquake struck the Ishikawa • Noto area of Japan, a region where many traditional crafts have flourished. This disaster destroyed over 6,000 homes and claimed the lives of more than 400 people. The already struggling traditional crafts of this area suffered an even greater blow.

I have taken on the task of designing products that utilize the traditional techniques of this area. Specifically, I decided to design a flower vase using the talents of the Hakuichi artisans, a workshop that has preserved gold leaf craftsmanship passed down in this region for 450 years. I felt that a flower vase would be an ideal way to introduce this traditional skill into everyday life.

I considered a flower vase to be a sort of a home for flowers, and as an architect, I set out to design a ‘House for Flowers’. I luxuriously adorned the exteriors of these ‘houses’ with the gold leaf created by the Hakuichi artisans. If plants could express their opinions, I would love to hear how it feels to live in such a lavish home.

Through this product, I hope to raise awareness about the current state of the traditional techniques of this area among a broader audience.
