The iconic Raes on Wategos has expanded its offering with the launch of ten new luxurious suites, marking an exciting evolution for the beloved Byron Bay institution. The new Raes Guesthouses, nestled just steps from the original hotel, bring a fresh interpretation of coastal luxury while maintaining the intimate charm that has defined the brand for three decades.
Sydney interior designer Tamsin Johnson has crafted spaces that dance between Spanish-Hollywood glamour and Balearic influence, infusing the interiors with earthen pastels in blues and greens. “I wanted to build on the soul of the original Raes property, while thoughtfully adapting to the unique architecture of this space,” Johnson explains. Her signature touches appear throughout—from organically moulded plasterwork to mid-century lighting and custom furnishings that feel perfectly at home against Byron’s coastal backdrop.
Each of the ten suites showcases meticulous attention to detail, featuring king-sized beds with custom-designed bedheads and sweeping views of either Wategos Beach or the serene gardens.
The property’s communal spaces are equally impressive, with two lap pools set against tropical gardens. Indoor common areas with open log fireplaces provide cosy gathering spaces year-round.
Raes managing director Jordy Catalano shares the vision behind the expansion: “Raes Guesthouses have allowed us to build on what we know guests love about Raes: warmth, elegance, and generous hospitality. We’re excited to introduce a fresh yet familiar take on luxury, just in time to celebrate our 30th birthday.”
This thoughtful expansion preserves the boutique nature of Raes while introducing a new chapter in luxury coastal accommodation. The property seamlessly weaves together architectural charm, design sophistication, and the laid-back elegance that defines Byron Bay’s unique coastal style.
