Nestled in a grassy hill on Victorias Mornington Peninsula, Norfolk House is an exotic and enchanting retreat. Its brutalist architecture combines with layered interiors to boldly take on the new look of a beachfront house on the coast of Victoria, Australia.

The homes interiors were designed by Simone Haag, whose haptic aesthetic and rugged material choices complement Travis Walton Architectures minimalist and intuitive presentation, challenging stereotypes of Australian coastal homes. The rich and rugged materials echo the weathering process and timeless beauty of the coast.

The client wanted to differentiate the project from their homes in the city and be able to take in views of the Bay, Melbourne skyline and the nearby golf course. They inspire the designers and ultimately create a pristine and luxurious atmosphere like a hotel. The building looks like a castle wall made of shaped concrete from the street, which foreshadows many unexpected moments and elements, and Travis Waltons aim was to construct a design philosophy that speaks for itself as an anti-architectural form.

The construction process is dominated by concrete and wood, which give a sense of simplicity. While most of the skin is a single concrete finish, many of the facades are clad in wood, creating a visual layer through different textures of different materials. The silver cave stone laid on the ground reflects the stable elegance in the minimalist barbarism style.

Stepping inside, a unique reverse living space is placed in an elevated, platform-like structure, creating an underground space that also acts as an unconventional entrance, creating a different entry experience. A sculptural concrete staircase leads to the master bedroom, which overlooks the rolling green hills of Sorrento Golf Course and the Bass Strait.

Initially, this sculptural concrete staircase was considered too complex and difficult to present, but through careful design and rigorous prototyping by builder Bear Agushi, the desired effect was eventually achieved.

While the interior of the Norfolk house is dominated by beige, camel and cream, Simone Haag wanted it to be different from the traditional beach house by avoiding excessive decoration and incorporating bold, unique and interesting furniture. A curved Snow sofa by Note Design Studio is placed in the center of the living room, with overlapping long hair and striped rugs that coordinate with each other.

Many of the facades are made of old metal, blackened steel and dark stone to create an original, unpretentious feel. This tone is particularly evident in the kitchen, where bronzed brass leaves its mark over time, complemented by green marble benches and leather-textured black countertops, creating a space that is both luxurious and functional.

Another seating area, called The Place of Comfort, features custom-made sofas and upholstered chairs from Chirimoyo, Mexico, as well as vintage lamps and yarn rugs. The carefully selected artwork in the space is both sculptural and functional, and resonates emotionally with the 1960s beach house.

When you walk through this house, its almost impossible to stop because you get lost in the original textures and elaborate details. This is a house that slowly reveals itself; Soft colors give it a special tone and calm atmosphere; The light dances in the space, making the space also a work of art.

Norfolk is intrinsically connected to its surroundings and is a stop in a peaceful setting. The floor-to-ceiling Windows and outdoor Landscape design by Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture capture Sorrentos laid-back atmosphere and meandering coastal attributes. They also planted a mature olive tree among the existing terrain and protected trees, added an infinity pool and a simple al fresco dining area to enrich the resort experience.
