The preschool is a two-story building originating from a configuration of three autonomous bars arranged in a triangular shape, allowing three connections to the campus: one for entry, another leading to the library, and the third to the “Parque del Asombro” or preschool park. The architecture incorporates organic shapes to avoid sharp edges, favoring curves and giving the space a sense of fluidity.
These three volumes house the classrooms for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and transition levels, as well as service spaces for teachers and support areas for academic activities. These areas are connected by a large folded canopy made of reinforced concrete. The folds add richness to the interior space and align with the spatial arrangement created by the angled walls.
In elevation, the building is composed of two parts: a base made up of brick volumes, and an upper section formed by a glass expansion and the folded canopy. The entryways connecting the main entrance and the library are marked by double-height windows that maintain thermal comfort, while the access to the park is completely open to ensure continuity between the outdoor space and the building’s central courtyard (agora).
The hallways and walls were designed to give children a sense of wonder and to allow the architectural elements to invite play. For instance, a ramp descending from the canopy breaks into the central courtyard, serving as a feature that makes it easier for children to reach the second level. Its steep slope encourages them to run as they use it.
As a pedagogical and operational premise, the building includes a large central space: a collective meeting agora sheltered from the rain and surrounded by classrooms, creating a place that encourages gathering and collaboration. This central space is encircled by a system of perimetric hallways around the triangular courtyard, providing access to the classrooms.
The materials include sandy-toned clay from the large-format bricks, which, combined with wooden ceilings and floors, create a warm and cohesive color palette. Accents are added through furniture in a restrained manner, avoiding the overuse of colors often seen in buildings for young children.
The mixed structure, made of reinforced concrete and some metal columns, includes a series of circular columns that fully separate the walls from the structure, creating a detached enclosure for the canopy. This expresses the individuality of the architectural elements.
