Historic Architecture in Montepulciano

The apartment is located in a residential building dating back to the early 1700s, according to the same source. The dwelling features minimalist spaces infused with brutalist furniture pieces.

“Inserted in an urban context of significant architectural value and location, the building in which the flat subject of intervention finds accommodation is part of a building complex that appears within the historical cartography of the village of Montepulciano from the early 1700s,” said Cecconi Associati. “The entire building complex, altered architecturally and structurally in the first half of the 20th century, is characterised by a strong vertical development that allows it to overcome the considerable difference in height between the two opposite elevations, given by the natural slope of the hill on which the village was built,” added the team. While the front of the building overlooking the main street, the rear facade opens views to Val di Chiana.

The meeting of the landscape and the urban structure defined the design parameters, Cecconi Associati said. The project was based on the planimetric layout of the building, made up of two interconnecting volumes that rotate along their common axis. The guidelines set by the perimeter walls were used to create new spaces, define paths, and to build internal fixtures. The reconstruction of the intermediate level allowed the space to be divided into two floors connected by an open steel staircase. The ground floor houses a living area, while a bedroom and related services are located upstairs, serviced by a hallway overlooking the staircase. The large windows of the living room immerse the spaces in light and alternate views of historical walls with scenic views that sometimes merge into a single image.

Contrast Between Minimalism and Brutalism
The use of wood for the floors and furnishings balances the minimalist aspect of the spaces, which also include custom-made brutalist furnishings for the owners. In the living area, designed as a single space, the furnishings are accentuated by elements such as the concrete dining table and the TV cabinet. In the kitchen, the arrangement follows the irregular geometric layout of the floor plan. The central island defines the space and paths, while the tall furniture occupies the entire wall – alternating workstations with columns, one of which acts as a wardrobe.

In the center, the custom-designed monolithic island becomes a sculptural piece, described by promoted Cecconi Associati as “a subtractive object” offering “elegant intimacy of the carved material.”
