Pillars are not obstacles, but rather, they regulate spaces and create profound order, creating dramatic spaces with pillars of woods.
Wood pillars which appear after the renovation create organic forests.
Thick walls of Japanese Cedars(Hinoki) articulate spaces and reflect natural light, bringing about beauty of light and shadow.
The walls of woods have been fixed by Hinoki cypress pegs which are placed with regularity, making the wood walls more tranquil and serene.
Not only the pillars regulate spaces, but they are useful for ordinary life, since the pillars become handrails for elderly or stools to sit down, providing elderly friendly spaces.
Living in this house reminds us the original life of human beings and possibility of architectures.
This house is an attempt of possibilities of pillars as well as efficient use of existing pillars.
This project, located in common residential area in Tokyo, calls for drastic refurbishment of a two-story typical wooden house which has been built about 60 years ago. To create original spaces, most of the inside spaces and some of the outside walls and sashes are totally renovated.
Although spaces were divided into small rooms on the first floor before, the client want a large living room. When you design a large room, many pillars are expected to appear.
You can replace some of the pillars by reinforcing beams, nevertheless, we completely leave them as they were before. A dialogue between old and new appears by respecting old grids of woods.
All pillars are made of Japanese cedar, beams are made of Douglas fir, and the surfaces covering the pillars are covered with laminated lumber made of domestic cedar boards. This laminated cedar lumber is 18mm thick, which gives it a "depth of material" that cannot be achieved with wood finishing materials that are only a few millimeters thick.
