Nestled in Kim Long, a neighborhood renowned for its unique Hue-style gardens, Kim Long House is a home designed to accommodate two generations—a young couple and their 4-year-old son. The homeowners desired a cost-effective home with a minimalist and understated design, combining modern convenience with a rustic, nature-inspired aesthetic.
The 15-meter-wide lot was divided into two sections: one for the house and the other for a future coffee shop. The design team positioned the house towards the rear, creating a horizontal layout reminiscent of traditional Hue houses. This layout features a central main house flanked by two auxiliary spaces and a spacious, low-lying veranda overlooking the interconnected courtyards. The shared living areas flow seamlessly into one another, creating an open and airy atmosphere that can accommodate large gatherings. The front yard and garage provide an opportunity for future expansion into a coffee shop without compromising the existing house or garden.
Hue houses are characterized by their distinctive porches, which provide shade from the intense sunlight and shelter from the rain. Kim Long House follows this tradition, featuring a versatile porch that extends beyond the front entrance, winding through the living spaces and bedrooms. This design element enhances the flow and connectivity between different areas of the house. Large sliding glass doors can be fully opened, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. This design choice fosters a sense of comfort, freedom, and connection to nature. The doors also offer privacy when needed, while providing the flexibility to expand the living area for larger gatherings.
A versatile seating platform serves as a transition between the rear garden and the front living area. It offers multiple uses, including relaxation, work, and study. The platform's horizontal window frame provides unobstructed views of the neighboring garden while optimizing natural light and ventilation within the house.
The interconnected gardens offer a seamless connection to nature from every corner of the house. The lush, green lawn provides ample space for family play. Although the project is still relatively new, the newly planted trees and shrubs are already thriving, promising a diverse and vibrant landscape in the future.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Hue garden houses, Kim Long House incorporates contemporary elements such as functional spaces, minimalist design, and innovative materials. This fusion of old and new creates a modern interpretation of the classic Hue garden house.
