“Splash Bridge”is 00Group's design proposal for the “2024 Shanghai Integrated Urban Innovation Infrastructure Competition” – Oriental Sports Center Metro Station.
The design concept for Splash Bridge draws inspiration from the distinctive textures of the Oriental Sports Center. By abstracting the undulating curves of "waves" from the sports center and adjacent swimming arena, and adopting the signature white tones of the architectural facade, the design integrates these elements into a modern reinterpretation. The flowing "wave" curves, reminiscent of sails catching the wind, are incorporated into both the bridge’s form and surface, creating a "new dialogue" with the existing architecture. This approach reimagines and extends the iconic design language of the Oriental Sports Center.
As a "bridge" in both form and function, Splash Bridge connects multiple layers of the urban fabric. It offers a seamless transition from street level onto the bridge, across its span, and into the Forest Plaza, encouraging an exploratory experience while improving the site’s circulation efficiency. The placement of the subway entrances and ventilation pavilions optimizes the spatial layout, making it more straightforward and effective.
The design prioritizes ecological sustainability, transforming the site into a vibrant green urban forest plaza. By moving away from the traditional hardscaped plazas, Splash Bridge creates a human-centered space, blending expansive green areas with public activities. This approach provides leisure and recreation opportunities for the surrounding community, integrating ecology into everyday urban life.
The subway entrances, as key design features, appear like "splashes of water" that have leapt off the Oriental Sports Center's facade, creating new visual markers within the contemporary urban context. At the corners of the plaza, the design guides visitors along the "wave" lines of the bridge. As the architectural form ascends in smooth, dynamic curves, it transitions into a white bridge structure, with Entrance 3 serving as both a functional connection between urban paving and forest greenery, and a symbolic gateway into the ecological space.
Ultimately, Splash Bridge merges aesthetics with functionality, enhancing the district’s identity while acting as a global landmark alongside the Oriental Sports Center. It provides not only efficient circulation and crowd guidance but also a stage for regional character, embodying an open and vibrant urban spirit.
