Wheelhouse 景观亭丨美国丨Mark Reigelman II

Wheelhouse景观亭以棒球这一美国经典运动为切入点，探索了Jennie Dean公园场地的工业历史。装置的灵感来源于18世纪早期曾矗立于此的磨坊以及公园丰富的休闲历史，作品既引用了当地历史磨坊的结构特征，又巧妙地融入了经典棒球术语。从20世纪初开始，这片公园便成为区域内黑人棒球队的重要聚集地，比赛日时更是成了社区活跃的社交中心。

Wheelhouse explores the industrial history of the Jennie Dean Park site through the lens of the great American pastime—baseball. Inspired by the mill that stood in this location in the early 1700s and the park’s rich recreational history, the artwork references the structural anatomy of the region’s historical mills while playing on classic baseball terminology. Starting in the early 20th century, the park became a major hub for Black baseball clubs in the region, where game days were lively social epicenters for the community.

景观亭名称“Wheelhouse”不仅指棒球中击球手认为最佳的击球区域，也象征磨坊的循环运作功能。该装置由24个从地面升起的屋形切片组成，形成一个透空的展亭结构，既让人联想到棒球场上的休息区（dugout），也仿佛呈现出磨坊轮子辐条放射状的视觉效果。

Wheelhouse, which refers to the location of the strike zone that the batter considers ideal, nods to the mill’s cyclical function and is reflected in the installation’s 24 house-shaped slices extending up from the ground. The resulting structure is a permeable pavilion that recalls a dugout as well as the radiating spokes of a churning wheel.

On the interior, mirrored stainless steel panels shimmer with the reflections of park activity and passersby, while a 20-foot bench crafted from reclaimed cypress offers visitors a comfortable respite. The radial repetition of the design offers both a thoroughfare and a gathering space, activated by the energetic uses, industrial roots, and sporting history that have shaped Jennie Dean Park.

Through material and form, the park’s renovation and integration of public art celebrate the industrial past of the surrounding area, the recreational heritage of Arlington County Parks and Recreation, and the natural qualities of the adjacent river system. The design and materials are simple and functional, using steel, wood, and concrete.
