Design Origin: Open Space Site
In the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, “space is the third teacher.” Children’s earliest spatial cognitive abilities rely on sensory experiences. During their sensitive period for space, they explore and understand the relationships between objects and space, themselves and objects, and themselves and space, forming their own concepts of space. Through comprehensive perception, they continuously explore and establish a sense of security. In their eyes, space is not bound by traditional definitions, and this freedom and agility is exactly what we hope to allow children to experience and explore in this project.
Disorderly, fragmented, and unpredictable spaces enhance children’s desire to explore within educational spaces. Enclosed interior spaces create a safe, inward-looking environment, yet they are open to each teaching unit, making this safe and open space the most child-friendly.

Paradise Creation: Three-Dimensional Childlike Fun

The central part of the campus is enclosed by 14 architectural blocks to form an irregularly elliptical large activity area, suitable for hosting various fun activities. The spatial connection system integrates the entire campus, consisting of three forms: a three-story sheltered corridor without wind or rain, the atrium enclosed by the blocks, and the activity platforms around the roofs of each classroom. These spaces are interwoven and connected, providing children with an environment for cognition, observation, perception, exploration, and measurement. From the moment they enter the campus, they can develop their spatial cognition and learning abilities in this variable space.

Observation space
In the indoor mini plant area, children can fully observe and explore nature. At the same time, they can run, jump, and gather repeatedly under the corridor spaces. The architectural design ensures that children can move freely in a safe environment, even if they fall or get wet. This kind of free exploration and interaction not only stimulates their curiosity but also promotes the development of their social and motor skills.

When children touch the colorful walls, they experience the unique tactile sensations brought by different shapes and geometric structures. These rich tactile experiences not only stimulate their curiosity and desire to explore but also help them establish spatial perception visually and haptically. Through this interaction, they can more deeply understand and experience the diversity and aesthetics of their surroundings.

Children can follow the patterns on the ground to explore, climb various equipment, touch the earth in the sand and water area, and fully experience the texture of nature. They play freely in the sunlight and breeze, feeling the charm of nature. These activities not only allow children to exercise their bodies while playing but also stimulate their curiosity and creativity, enabling them to learn to observe and discover the wonders of the world around them during the exploration process.

Spatial measurement
In outdoor spaces, children can crawl into various different spaces to experience and compare body scales firsthand. They can climb into narrow holes, pass through low tunnels, and stand on open grasslands, feeling the sense of oppression or openness that different spaces bring. This interaction between the body and space not only helps them understand and measure the scale of the physical world but also cultivates their spatial awareness and self-perception abilities. As they continue to explore, children learn how to adapt and adjust themselves in different environments, an experience that has a profound impact on their growth and development.Children can define different scenes by changing tables and chairs, sliding doors, carpets, furniture, and decorations. Through these transformable elements, they can simulate real-life environments and experience different social roles. This constant exploration is a process of self-creation and also a process for children to surpass themselves.

Vibrant Boundaries: The Organic Emergence of Order
Order and Disorder: Integrating into the Site

The project site is a regular rectangle, surrounded by neat residential communities, with an orderly urban fabric. We have arranged fourteen functional blocks in a staggered manner within the site, enclosing a variety of courtyard spaces for children to play in. The orderly architectural interface creates a free and disordered external space. Through the layout of staggered units, we form an orderly plan function and a disordered internal space, showing a rich hierarchy and a changing layout. This design not only incorporates the breeze, allowing children to feel the fragrance of the earth and the breath of nature, but also stimulates their interest in exploration through the layered and interwoven spatial structure.

Rooftop Space: Remodeling Daylighting
The rooftop space of the kindergarten has been meticulously designed to resemble a wooden house with a sloping roof. This unique design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building but also provides a space for activities. Children can engage in various games and activities within this cozy wooden house space, enjoying natural light and fresh air while experiencing the distinctive joy of exploration.

Rooted in the Earth
The building facade is designed with a warm yellow hue that resonates with the forest, and the windows of varying sizes are arranged in a staggered and richly varied pattern, creating multi-angle diffuse reflections of light, which fills the atmosphere with a sense of childlike wonder. We look forward to children being in such a space, as if they are in the vast forest, where every step is filled with new discoveries and adventures.

Enclosure Structure and Circulation Core: Detailed Design
The grid-style railings serve not only as a safety barrier but also ensure visual permeability. This design makes the internal courtyard a vibrant stage. Moreover, the three-story continuous grid is designed to let children experience the unique charm of looking through a bamboo forest.
Bright yellow stairs run through the interior and exterior of the building, further blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces, guiding children to outdoor activities during breaks. They run towards the next destination of exploration amidst the changing bright light and shadow. The design approach that combines an orderly traffic system with the disorderly movement lines of children can inspire their spirit of exploration while also fostering their sense of direction and boundary awareness.

结语
Conclusion
Safe and friendly activity spaces, circular sports areas, and child-friendly small houses are places that children in modern cities rarely have all at the same time. As a very important stage in their growth, kindergartens, meeting these functions and making children love them is our original intention in design. Rich and complex spatial forms are very helpful in stimulating children’s desire to explore and their curiosity, which is also a new exploration in this project for us.
