The Simple and Warm Sunshine
In Guiyang, what touches people the most is undoubtedly the simple and warm sunshine. Coincidentally, our building has two small sunny gardens in the northwest, allowing the sunlight in Guizhou to directly shine into the interior. This also gave birth to our initial intention of designing “Jiang”, a restaurant and bar that represents the humanistic feelings of Guiyang. Before 8 pm, it is a restaurant mainly serving private Guizhou cuisine. After 8 pm, it becomes a cocktail bar with local cultural characteristics. It is essential to make everyone in the space feel the sunshine and nature of Guiyang. We hope that guests coming to “Jiang” will have a place to dine in the garden, an opportunity for an urban vacation.

Returning to the True Nature

Walking into “Jiang”, we can see the familiar deconstructivism, yet it is quite different. Under the framework of deconstructivism, we hope to downplay the techniques of the space. Through warm-toned, rustic, minimalist, and log-textured surface materials, many blank spaces are created in the space. We hope that in this space, people can be immersed in the environment, and their eyes will always be attracted by the natural landscapes, sunshine, and rain.

Creating Blurred Boundaries

In terms of the spatial experience, the designer has run through the concept of “courtyard” all the way. The white wall at the entrance forms a natural angle with the road. By climbing the steps, a sense of ritual of winding into the front yard is created. The building itself is a renovation of an old house. The designer has made some recesses and projections on the building. The exquisite pitched roof and the 26-meter-long corridor that runs through the indoor and outdoor areas not only enhance the dining experience under the corridor but also form a unique sign at the entrance. This makes “Jiang” look as if there is a seamless penetration between the inside and outside of the space from the outside, yet it does not overshadow the overall effect. With the embellishment of green plants, the sunlight sways gently, just right.

The original indoor space was narrow and fragmented. The designer adapted to local conditions, utilized the originally fragmented space, and orderly incorporated different courtyard forms to form indoor courtyard groups with different scale experiences. Combined with the creation of natural light from the dome, a feeling of enjoying a garden tour with changing views at every step and a pleasant sense of openness and closeness is created. It not only enriches the dining scenes but also meets the dining needs of various customer groups, making each dining space full of comfortable dimensions and an ambiguous and pleasant enjoyment. Moreover, not only is the plane full of changes, but the designer also continuously strengthens the changes and experiences of the space in the elevation space. In the core bar area, the original height difference of 4.5 meters of the building is retained, making a contrast between the hall and the entrance of the building, creating a low-key yet unique scene.

The north side of the bar is connected to the backyard. The countertop extends to form a table in the yard. Above the countertop, through the window lattice, the bartender can easily take care of the guests in the yard. Under the tree in the yard, guests can watch the bartender at the bar in a daze or chat with friends.

Originally, outside the curved floor-to-ceiling window on the north side of the bar was a messy taxi park. We paved the building bricks in an arc-shaped array to half-hide and half-reveal, project light and shadow in. With the changes of day and night and seasons, this place is full of the romance of the passage of time.

Walking through the long corridor outside the pavilion are two of the largest private rooms. Using the curved and rotating walls that extend upward, the spatial hierarchy is enriched, making it lively and full of a sense of enclosure. The two private rooms share a natural landscape. The line of sight extends through the tree shadows to each other, thus creating a connection between the spaces.

Stories Discovered Only at Night
If the “Jiang” during the day is a natural and pure goddess, then the “Jiang” at night is an ambiguous earthly charm. The lighting design of the entire space hardly uses direct lighting. Instead, it combines with the elevation modeling to create changes at different heights and levels in the space, subtly creating a sense of story in the space at night. It is not direct but guides you to explore her entirety step by step.

The presentation of “Jiang” is a brand-new exploration of the combination of deconstructivism and naturalism, with restrained and implicit techniques and a balance that gives priority to feelings, constantly exploring the temperature of the space.
