Rowland+Broughton Architecture / Urban Design / Interior Design is thrilled to announce the re-opening of our new build Rusty Parrot Lodge project in Jackson, Wyoming. A long-loved luxury destination, the Rusty Parrot is set at the edge of town against the rural back drop of Flat Creek and East Gros Ventre Butte and across the street from Miller Park.

Following a devastating fire in 2019, The Harrisons, owners of the Rusty Parrot Lodge, challenged the design team to re-capture the singular spirit of the original Rusty Parrot building while conforming to new zoning standards. Signature elements of the former lodge were reinterpreted via the heavy timber construction of arched bottom trusses in the gables featuring "crow's feet" cross bracing, as well as arched openings within the stone walls indicating a hierarchy of movement. The use of large-scale wood siding and natural stone captures the local vernacular and lodge-like aesthetic. In addition, the design team integrated roof decks on upper levels, allowing the structure to step back in scale and mass and complementing the transition from urban to neighborhood context. These unique outdoors spaces function as guest amenities, encouraging enjoyment of views of the park, adjacent mountains, and wildlife.

Inspired by the great lodges of the West and the rugged, natural beauty of Jackson, the architecture is rooted in place balancing both the urban and rural context of the site. Emerging from the stone walls that anchor the building, three-story gabled roof forms create a rhythm of balconies along the facade. The form is a balance between old and new, a timeless desire to remain rooted to the past yet relevant through the future.

A central theme of the project is a sense of discovery, an integral feeling of the original Rusty Parrot. A series of found moments are distributed throughout the hotel encouraging guests to explore and wander. An open grand stair is the central and defining element of the lobby and connects it to the guest rooms above. The atrium is crowned with a public deck, dubbed the Parrot’s Roost, providing views to Miller Park and the surrounding landscape, once again connecting the Parrot to its time and place. Sustainability, an on-going theme of the project following LEED and WELL criteria, drives the overall design. Biophilic experiences are integrated throughout, as well as an open-loop ground source heat pump for heating and cooling, paired with a high-performance envelope to maximize efficiency. 

About the re-opening of the Rusty Parrot Lodge, R+B Founding Principal Sarah Broughton, FAIA, shares, “Being entrusted with the opportunity to bring this wonderful, iconic lodge back to the Jackson community has truly been an honor. As a team, we acknowledged the importance of re-capturing much of the ethos of the original structure. Maintaining distinctive exterior materials, such as rustic log and stone, and giving a nod to previous design details in a new way ensures that the structure relates to its past as it moves forward as a legacy project. Congratulations to all involved". R+B worked alongside WRJ in designing the interiors.
