The late 19th-century house is situated in De Pijp, a formerly working-class neighbourhood of Amsterdam that has become one of the liveliest and most sought-after areas in the Dutch capital.
During our initial conversations, the client recalled the aesthetics of his mid-century childhood home on a lake near Seattle. To create a similarly serene atmosphere, the decision came naturally to clad both the inside and the outside of the extension with wood. We proposed an intimate ‘indoor tree house’ space that would be conducive to both relaxation and concentration. The Tree House extension plays with the boundaries between the garden and the house, but also between the existing interior and the new part. It features transitions from outside to inside, from open to intimate, from relaxation to focus.
