Nou Group has designed its new head office within the CR Project Service Office HUB, in Viterbo (near Rome - Italy) a project that exemplifies efficient and sustainable architecture, fully reflecting the firm’s design philosophy.
The project undertaken by Nou Group entails the retrofitting of a 2700 sqm existing industrial building, aiming to honor its industrial heritage while seamlessly updating its envelope technology. The project also included the structure's seismic resilience and the transformation of the internal spaces into innovative, eco-friendly smart offices, blending functionality with sustainability.
Nou Group is a pioneering and rapidly expanding architectural and engineering studio based in Viterbo – a city near Rome, founded in 2017 by architect Daniele Conticchio alongside three partners with robust architectural and financial backgrounds - Aurora Del Sette, Alessandro Graziotti, later joined by architect Emanuele Viani. The firm aims to fuse extensive experience in the clean energy market with the development of significant civil architectural and engineering projects. Nou Group specializes in designing large-scale buildings for both public and private sectors, boasting expertise in prominent photovoltaisarissc plants across Europe.
“The name "Nou" is inspired by the concept of the Noosphere, representing the realm of human thought and the collective consciousness of humanity. The company's mission is to craft projects that enhance the living experience, ranging from individual homes to urban developments, while embracing the natural evolution of every environmental and social context in which it operates. As a green enterprise, Nou Group focuses on infrastructures related to the design of sustainable renewable energy systems. We aspire to contribute to a sustainable future, united by a common goal. Our core business revolves around renewable energy production, complemented by architectural and engineering initiatives. Additionally, we engage in sustainability, design, consulting, and management” said Conticchio.
Nou Group’s green philosophy was prominently showcased during Milan’s Fuorisalone 2024 through its traveling installation, the tram dubbed "Cassandra Mission." Designed as a thought-provoking experience, it invites participants to envision a dystopian future in which a spaceship from the year 2124 safeguards the last remaining patch of greenery on Earth. Those who boarded were encouraged to reflect on their role in addressing environmental challenges, engaging in themed discussions and interactive sessions focused on sustainability and the imperative of embracing virtuous behaviors to protect and preserve our planet.
NOU GROUP HEADQUARTERS
Nou Group’s new headquarters, the CR Project Service Office HUB in Viterbo, embodies the company’s vision as an innovative and sustainable workspace designed to inspire creativity while revitalizing urban environments. This structure stands as a paragon of efficient and sustainable architecture, fully reflecting the studio’s design philosophy. Completed in 2021/2022, the CR Project Service Office HUB has emerged as a true green urban generator within Viterbo's industrial sector.
“The project involved the transformation of an existing industrial shed into a modern office and warehouse space. Our aim was to create a highly energy-efficient building with a contemporary architectural language, one that also contributes to the urban redevelopment of its surroundings”, Conticchio emphasizes.
This unique workspace offers an expansive, outward-facing environment characterized by transparency and brightness. The design respects the site's industrial heritage while embracing contemporary principles of sustainability and smart working. The building preserves the memory of its industrial past through the renovation of its façade, with some elements newly constructed and others restored beneath a fresh exterior. The ventilated curtain wall system is featured by Agrob Buchtal porcelain stoneware with a corten finish.
While retaining its productive essence, the building has been thoughtfully reconfigured to meet new functional requirements and address modern energy and environmental needs. All design solutions adhere to the C.A.M. guidelines and comply with the LEED protocol, BD+C – New Construction, v.4 rating system. The project encompassed roofing, façade construction, external landscaping, internal space distribution, and the comprehensive renovation of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Primarily a single-story structure, the building features a two-story section at the southwest corner, referred to as the "head," covering a total area of approximately 2,700 sqm, shaped by the aggregation of three staggered rectangles.
Key features include green areas, interactive spaces, and horizontal connections that link various office buildings. Inside, the ambiance transcends that of a traditional office, fostering a vibrant "workplace" environment—a hub of ideas. With privacy niches, semi-transparent partitions, lush green walls adorned with stabilized moss, and an excellent interplay of natural and artificial light, this project prioritizes both efficiency and well-being.
The result is a fresh, informal space that blends elements of home and hotel lobby. While the design was driven by the need for corporate representation focused on sustainability, it also addresses the necessity for flexible work environments that support agile organizational structures—creating a hybrid space that merges the functionalities of an office and a living room.
“At present, sustainability is a central topic across all sectors. However, social impact is closely intertwined with it and is gaining prominence in discussions. Well-being and social sustainability—essentially, designing spaces that empower individuals to express themselves, forge connections, and cultivate relationships—are fundamental to creating environments where people can thrive”, asserts Conticchio.
In this light, the project offers spaces that exude sobriety and elegance, promoting collaboration, sharing, and relaxation.
“It’s a place where one can fluidly transition between formal and informal work. The arrangement of traditional workstations alongside lounge areas and meeting rooms injects dynamism into the workday, enhancing interaction as it unfolds”, Conticchio specifies.
