Corkfield is a 325,000-square-foot multifamily project that fosters a community for like-minded individuals. As one of the first in a new wave of build-to-rent projects emerging in the UK suburbs, Corkfield sets a fresh standard for suburban living. Located next to a stadium that draws tens of thousands of visitors annually, the Arcadis design team faced the challenge of creating a high-quality, sustainable residential project that forges strong connections with the local community. Amenities include personal balconies, a lush central courtyard, a terrace overlooking the cricket ground, unobstructed views of Birmingham, coworking spaces, communal lounges, and pooch pods (for furry friends).
The architectural concept draws inspiration from Birmingham's distinctive local character, notably the prevalent use of red brick seen across the city. Incorporating elements such as brick banding and intricate patterns reminiscent of those found in nearby structures, the design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding urban fabric. Building upon the precedent set by the neighboring Wickets tower, the project recognizes the site's potential for verticality. This informed the decision to include a tower element strategically positioned at the intersection of Pershore Road and Edgbaston Road. Serving as a prominent landmark, it not only enhances the area's identity but also serves to orient visitors towards the cricket stadium.
Brick serves as the foundational material chosen for its durability and longevity. Carefully curated, the mix of red, buff, and gray bricks establishes a cohesive connection with the surrounding architectural landscape while also contributing to a visually dynamic façade. Aluminum windows feature prominently, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic consistency. Notably, a perforated screen adorns the ground floor along Pershore Road, embellished with a cricket wicket motif, paying homage to the project's local context and neighboring structures.
