The New Sea Lock "Nieuwe Sluis" in Terneuzen is a true mega-project, ranking among the largest locks in the world. Comparable in scale to the renowned Panama Canal locks, this engineering marvel stands as a testament to innovation and ambition. As part of this monumental undertaking, we had the privilege of supplying and installing a Glazing Vision Sliding Box on the Dienstenhaven Building, providing sleek and functional roof access. Contributing to such a groundbreaking project was nothing short of extraordinary.
Roof Access to the Services Harbour Building with a Sliding Box
The new “Gebouw Dienstenhaven” building features a state-of-the-art Sliding Box for seamless roof access. Located in the West Outer Harbour, the service harbour spans an impressive 385 meters in length and 95 meters in width. Designed to support maritime service providers with direct access to the Terneuzen lock complex, this facility will soon house the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, Boluda, and Muller Maritime Holding.
About the Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen
The Sea Lock “Nieuwe Sluis” is a key part of the North Sea Locks system, enabling larger sea-going vessels to navigate the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal and access the Port of Ghent. In October 2024, the first ship passed through this engineering marvel. Comparable in scale to the locks of the Panama Canal, the Nieuwe Sluis measures an impressive 427 meters in length, 55 meters in width, and 16.44 meters in depth. It accommodates massive vessels up to 366 meters long, 49 meters wide, and with a draft of up to 14.5 meters.
Installing the Sliding Box
Amid this monumental project, the installation of the Sliding Box is surprisingly straightforward. Delivered as a single, pre-assembled unit, the glass box is lifted into position using a crane equipped with a lifting frame. Beforehand, kerbs are constructed around the roof recess to ensure a precise and secure fit.
The certified installation team inspects these kerbs prior to installation. After that, it’s simply a matter of placing the Sliding Box roof access onto the kerb, securing it, and fine-tuning the motors and electronic operation.
