Set in the tranquil mountains of Bahía Ballena, Osa, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, the Frowein Residence, known as the Butterfly House, is a distinctive cruciform design that harmonizes architecture and its natural surroundings. Each wing of the cross-shaped layout is carefully oriented to frame unique views: the Pacific Ocean, protected mountain landscapes, rural pastures, and the property’s lush greenery. These orientations create a dynamic living experience, where the environment becomes an integral part of the home.
The slim profile of each wing allows for dual-sided views and leads to four interstitial courtyards, each with its own character. From a reflective pool to a garden, a dry, desert-like scape to a grassy knoll, these spaces extend the living areas and enhance the connection to nature. At the ends of each wing, large openings emphasize specific vistas, blending the interior with the outdoors and inviting the surrounding landscapes into the home.At the heart of the residence lies the kitchen, positioned at the intersection of the wings.
This central hub fosters interaction and serves as the gathering space for the home’s inhabitants. Vaulted ceilings and open spaces between the wings amplify natural ventilation, light, and the overall sense of expansiveness, promoting a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. The Frowein Residence is a thoughtful balance of design and environmental awareness, a space that not only serves its inhabitants but also celebrates the natural beauty of Bahía Ballena.
