Creativity is often associated with inventing projects, forcing concepts and forms, while reality presents us with various issues awaiting solutions. In the case of consolidated cities, urban renewal and regeneration pose critical questions that, due to their complexity, are often delayed or overlooked.
The centers and neighborhoods of many cities house a significant number of valuable buildings that are deteriorating and becoming materially obsolete, as well as losing their heritage and economic value. Frequently, the social, cultural, economic, and political cycles have evolved, and the architectural and urban values are undervalued by current dynamics and innovative real estate markets. However, the landscape of our cities is a rich and valuable heritage that does not deserve to be treated as expendable. Urban development and evolution should not focus solely on demolishing buildings to make way for new construction.
PHPL represents the challenge of recycling and regenerating a penthouse built in Medellín, in the El Poblado neighborhood, during the 1980s. This project arises from the need to address the issue of obsolescence and deterioration of valuable buildings in the city. Medellín, a city in constant growth and evolution, faces the dilemma of preserving its architectural heritage or yielding to the pressures of new construction.
The regeneration of the penthouse aims not only to revitalize a specific building but also to set a precedent for sustainable and heritage-conscious urban renewal.
The PHPL proposal is based on the premise that it is possible to renovate and update existing spaces while respecting their historical and cultural value, incorporating contemporary technologies and designs that enhance the quality of life for their inhabitants. This approach, in addition to being economically viable, contributes to urban sustainability and the preservation of the city’s identity.
PHPL: A House in the Sky for an Artist
The PHPL project redefines contemporary living by transforming an apartment into a house in the sky, tailored to the needs of an artist. The two-level layout organizes the bedrooms on the first floor and the social areas, including a music studio, on the second. This design, developed by Del Valle Studio and ar_ea, creates spaces that unfold gradually as they are explored.
The entrance features a neutral, monolithic materiality with a double-height space highlighted by metal beams transformed into a functional bookshelf, reinterpreting their structural role. A garden beneath the staircase breaks the monolithic appearance and serves as the connection to the bedrooms, all of which offer views of the city of Medellín.
On the second level, the open kitchen and outdoor BBQ area are on the right, while the living room (live session) and other functional spaces are on the left. The integration of a recording studio with soundproofing allows for recording in various areas of the house, promoting a new way of working with music and connecting art with domestic space.
The roof, a sculptural double-curvature element made of prefabricated wooden pieces, extends to the terraces and connects all second-floor spaces perimetrically. These spaces are surrounded by productive gardens with edible species. This solution enables the roof to reduce direct sun exposure, while the vegetation helps lower interior temperatures, captures CO2, and attracts local wildlife.
