Quebec city’s Sushibox, led by Chef Patrick Landry, has long had a devout following because of its high quality sushi, using locally sourced fish and produce. Future Simple Studio was approached to imagine a new experience for the restaurant, one which encompasses a Take Out area along with an expanded Dining Room.
Stepping through the entrance door, a tightly fluted glass vestibule allows a smooth transition inside. The interior is redesigned with geometric shapes, elemental materials and handcrafted details, allowing the colors and textures of the cuisine to shine and create an exceptional sensory experience. The Take Out area and the Dining Room are connected by a long handcrafted concrete counter (artist Zian Miscioscia in collaboration with Future Simple Studio) and are separated by a large circular opening that intersects the counter.
Each section is designed to contrast and complement one another. In the Take Out area, the tones are neutral, the lighting is bright, and vertical blinds allow for beautiful slats of sunshine to brush against guests as they place their orders. In the Dining Room area, guests enter an intimate and hushed environment. At the bar counter, every seat is dotted with its own lava stone pendant (David Pompa design). The seating area can allow for privacy and larger groups by raising or lowering hanging sheer electric panels that separate the black-top tables.
An attention to detail and preference for handcrafted elements anchored Future Simple Studio's approach, resulting in a design that unites strong lines with natural textures and neutral tones, evoking a simultaneously brutalist and serene atmosphere.
