Two Cultures Influence Feng House Design
Feng House, designed by BLA Design Group in Vancouver, Canada, harmoniously fuses West Coast modern architecture with traditional Chinese elements. The structure features floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing ample natural light to flood the interiors. Large gables extend over the main level, acting as a cantilevered cover for the recessed entry patio. This design choice is both aesthetic and practical, especially considering Vancouver’s frequent showers. Standing seam metal cladding envelops the home, providing protection from rain and sun.

Outside, naturally stained cedar siding lines the front and back, mirroring the surrounding natural environment. Large sliding glass doors at the rear create an expansive and interconnected space comprising the living, dining, kitchen, and patio areas. This configuration not only enhances the home’s size but also facilitates a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.

Interior Respects Traditional Chinese Designs
The interiors of Feng House pay homage to the family’s Asian heritage. In the entryway, slatted wood panels display a custom artwork, a topographic sculpture of Hangzhou, adding a personal touch to the space. This use of slatted walls extends throughout the home, acting as room dividers that facilitate the natural flow of light. Inspired by the traditional Chinese “ping feng,” these panels create a calming backdrop for the entry area, tea table, and dining table.
