Sustainable Materials: Design Development /2024
This project explores sustainable lighting design, focusing on innovative assembly techniques to align with environmental principles. While part of a broader material research initiative, my work centers on rethinking the lamp’s assembly using the unique properties of the provided material.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First: The Provided Material
Is a composite of natural fibers (cardboard), Tree derived binder, and water.
The material starts as a dough-like mix then dries into a rigid form.
Second: The Challenge
To design the lamp and develop an eco-friendly assembly method that aligns with the manufacturing constraints.
Third: The Goal
To ensure that every component of the lamp is simple to mold and assemble, allowing easy disassembly at the end of the lamp's life cycle, leading to repair, recycling,
or natural biodegradation.
Fourth: The Story
The concept for this design emerged while experimenting with material samples in the form of cups. As I stacked the cups together, I noticed the tight fit and friction between them, making it difficult to separate them. This moment sparked the idea to utilize this friction-based assembly technique in the lamp's design, allowing for a secure fit without the need
for additional fasteners or components.
Fourth: The Process
Using the design thinking methodology, I alternated between ideation, iteration, and testing.
I began with concept sketches, then translated them into CAD models and created 3D-printed prototypes to evaluate the form and functionality. Finally, I used 3D-printed molds to produce material samples, keeping scalability and mass production in mind throughout the process.
Fifth: The Result
The outcome is a modular lamp collection with a universal assembly,
requiring no glue or fasteners promoting sustainability.
