Inspired by early 20th-century European design and American modernism, the home features oak and carefully selected vintage furniture. Together, the designer and the homeowner conceived a functional living space designed to create as much space as possible. Design challenges included a public elevator hall, a fire staircase and a series of unusable storage rooms at the center of the two units. These common service areas ultimately proved to be dynamic and almost completely wrapped, providing a sense of direction for the design.

The interior begins with a spacious interior hall that forms an active north-south division. Windows on the north wall have been modified to squint across Central Park and bring in plenty of light from the citys west side. On the left side of the hall are the bar, library, dining room, kitchen and living room, which become entertainment Spaces. A right turn leads to the bedroom, bathroom and powder room, a quiet area of privacy.

There is a clear shared vision between the designer and the client, and a deep appreciation for art Deco. Inspired by the French and Italian 30s, 40s and 50s, the team, in collaboration with Studio Mellone and Manhattan-based architect Anik Pearson, sought inspiration from Art Deco to the Bauhaus, Le Corbusier to the New Wave. The result is the creation of a sophisticated New York family home with a European feel.

Harmonious and cheerful throughout the house, sensitive colours in ochre, gold and grey complement an array of distinguished texture choices that echo wood panels, herringbone floors, velvet and lots of marble. Gio Ponti armchairs, Edward Wormley side tables and Jean-Charles Moreux lamps feature in the larger living room and library. Formal dining tables and chairs by Brooklyn-based designer Green River Project, soft furnishings by Studio Mellone and woodworking are sprinkled throughout the home.

The focal point is an elaborate fireplace in the large living room set off by two vintage Swedish stools covered in Aissa Dione fabric. The fireplace, inspired by Milans Villa Necchi Campiglio, is a masterpiece combining old and new. Through careful design and extreme attention to detail, Mellone has succeeded in creating a living space that is both modern and classic.
