My friend Xiao Li went to the scene, she said that the scene was more shocking than the photos sent to her, I asked her how she felt, and she said: “I feel that being in the tower will evoke the voice in my heart.” Her words reminded me, and I found a sketchbook of the concept, and turned to the concept of the time: “As if there was light” – I made a round hole in the top of the closed water tower, made of thin steel plates, hoping that the tower would be like a lighthouse, shining light from the top and cutting through the dark sky.

When I first saw the scene, I was amazed by the beautiful scenery of the Meidian Reservoir in the west. This water tower is not the traditional red brick water tower with slender and tall proportions, but has a low pier, which must be the reason why it stands on the high ground of the hill. Therefore, when entering the gate of the camp on the mountain island, you first glimpsed this water tower from afar, and then circled it around and saluted before coming to the top of the mountain. Like a pilgrimage to La Chapelle de Ronchamp, it spirals and rises, expecting and then amazed.

Looking closely, the lower part of the red brick is old, the upper part of the circular tank is also damaged, and there are a few unknown small trees that actually grow out of the cracks. I said to the owner Boning, this can also be preserved – I think what I want to keep in my heart is not the small tree, but to retain this sense of vicissitudes. The water tower’s tank was originally filled with water, so I judged that it must be able to carry the lateral pressure and the weight of the water, and the structural safety has been “tested by history”. Aerial photography surveyed the original roof, which turned out to be prefabricated concrete strips in the shape of slats: the unit is a strip, because it is really not wide, about 30 centimeters – therefore, it is easy to remove, replace it with a steel plate, and a circular skylight with a thin plate in the middle is easy to achieve.

How to get up? At first, the idea was to make a spiral staircase inside, but after thinking about it, if the interior is made into a spiral staircase, there will be no space to stay inside. And when we want to get inside the water tower tank, don’t we just want to be in a daze for a while? So, I pulled the stairs to the outside and pulled a straight line. Using steel plates to achieve this is like boarding the gangway of an alien spaceship – and because of the concept of gangway, I left a 100 mm gap between the steel plate and the water tower – this physical gap is also what I want to express, the juxtaposition and contrast between the old and the new.

The underside of the staircase needs to be supported, and in the beginning concept, the columns that support the staircase are perpendicular to the ground. In the process of deepening the structure, I suddenly felt that the inclined columns would better reflect the sense of instability and strength, so I changed the columns to be perpendicular to the staircase and inserted into the ground in an inclined shape. And when painting the white staircase railing in the later stage, insist on not painting the column and the bottom of the stair step, so that the white staircase looks at it sharply, as if it is floating in the air. The ceremonial straight staircase, which rises up the stairs and faces the opening of the water tower, is also said by some friends to be “the staircase of heaven”. Entering the rough opening, stepping into the inside of the tank, the original ground and wall are preserved, and facing the reservoir to the west, a horizontal hole with a height of 800 mm and a width of 1600 mm is opened, which is like a long landscape painting, framing the water surface and a touch of sunset, islands and mountains such as Daiyuan, and also framing the hearts of tourists.

Inside the water tower, there are only 2 curved steel plate seats against the wall. Sit there and watch the light and shadow change at the top of the hole, the clouds roll and the stars move. The small, round interior space envelops our body, as if cut off from nature. But the natural wind, light, water, and stars are magnified by the opening, and I have always said that “architecture is the amplifier of nature”. Modern people have been living in a state of information overload for a long time, and they have lacked the perception of nature. At this moment, in this tower, although the space is small, time will disappear, and only the light will shine into inner peace.
