This project is located in a picturesque natural scenic area near Shenzhen, with the architectural form being a two-level villa with stacked units. This unique building shape limits our design scope to the bottom two floors, while the upper neighboring buildings will retain their original features. The overall style of the villa community is tropical, featuring warm-colored paint, dark brown trim, and sloping eaves. The primary challenge of the project was integrating the new design into this environment.

The owner’s family includes a middle-aged couple, a young housekeeper, and three cats and dogs of varying ages. The owner hopes to excavate approximately 500 square meters of living space to meet their pursuit of quality living aspirations. After considering architectural style, the neighborhood environment, structural constraints, property regulations, and the owner’s lifestyle vision, we quickly proposed a rational architectural renovation concept. The living experience in a villa differs greatly from an apartment, and the design needs to balance privacy with an open dynamic flow while meeting various functional layout needs. For this, we adopted a “space-first, function-adapted” design strategy, creating the overall architectural space first, then configuring various living functions based on its characteristics.

Given the neighbor’s building shape above cannot be adjusted, we decided to simplify the eaves and trim elements into geometric forms to present a subtle “base” stance, harmoniously blending with the surrounding environment. The design core revolves around a three-layer stacked box concept. We abstracted the design into three boxes stacked in order from top to bottom and adjusted their relative positions and relationships to create a multi-dimensional spatial effect.

The top box, adjoining the neighbor’s house, is the most visually prominent volume. To enhance its presence and clearly define boundaries, we emphasized its solid form, creating a sharp contrast with the neighboring structure. The middle box, representing the ground floor, was “pushed out,” allowing the second-floor box to cantilever above, thereby creating an open space that connects the front and rear courtyards on the first floor. The first-floor box was further recessed, merging with the third, underground box to form a distinctive sunken courtyard. These three boxes, positioned with varying gestures and overlapping relationships, construct a spatial “framework” with striking contrasts of solidity and openness.

Based on these three boxes, the spatial attributes and functions of each floor naturally evolve. The first floor, being the largest living space, includes a living room, dining room, media room, and other daily social areas, along with a separate living and storage space for the aunt. The design here focuses on separating movement from quietness and connecting the interior with the exterior, with enclosed boxes housing essential living functions, while the open areas integrate the garden and courtyard into the “environmental space.”

The second floor serves more private residential functions. With its elevated views and greater privacy, it houses the master bedroom, bathroom, dressing room, and study. The window design ensures both good views and privacy. The theme of this space is “private space,” providing a serene retreat for the owners.

The basement level benefits from the sunken courtyard’s introduction, avoiding the closed, oppressive feeling typical of traditional underground spaces. This area includes a tatami room, storage room, and other auxiliary living facilities. It interacts more with natural light, isolating external disturbances and offering a quiet atmosphere, hence we named it the “inner space.”

After carefully assigning themes to each space, we meticulously refined the details: lighting placements, material seam alignments, air conditioning vent forms, and the matching of switches and smart control systems, striving to add sufficient design sense to every corner. We even engaged in intense discussions with all parties involved in the project to ensure every design element was realized. We aimed to achieve a satisfying design by exercising strong control over every aspect.

However, construction remains unfinished, and there are still variables to consider. From the formation of the building structure to the interior construction phase, the owner’s deep involvement brought new energy and challenges to the design. Through first-hand experience of the spatial atmosphere, the owners developed more ideas about the unfinished residence. The owner’s role shifted from an observer to a co-creator, and we tried to strike a balance between the rational expression of the design and the owner’s emotional preferences. Adjustments were made to the functional layout, material choices, supplier cooperation, and on-site construction standards. This “secondary growth” of the design has, in some ways, added more personality and vitality to the space. Each discussion and adjustment became a contest between reason and emotion, which turned out to be the most dramatic twist of the project.

The design’s core shifted from a pure “architectural logic” to a “symbiotic logic.” In this dialogue, the professionalism of the design was tested, while the owner’s life wisdom also emerged. In a sense, this “design openness” is what makes the project so captivating. Although the purity of the design was diluted at certain points, what replaced it was a more authentic, vibrant living state. It is no longer just a “designer’s creation,” but a work co-created by the occupants and the designer.

Six months later, when we revisited the villa, we found that it had far exceeded the original imagination. The arrangement of furniture, adjustments to soft furnishings, and even each plant in the garden were personally selected and arranged by the owners. The living atmosphere was so vivid that it almost made one overlook the architectural ambiance created by the initial design. This is not a regret, but rather the ultimate destination of architectural design — leaving the “completion” of the architecture to life itself. This villa has transformed from a static “design piece” into a dynamic “living container.”
