Dimora a Porta Romana is an apartment in a historic building in Milan’s Porta Romana district renovated by BOATTOMARTINOstudio. Completed in 2024, the project melds contemporary design with timeless elegance, resulting in a space that celebrates both modern architecture and the building’s historical charm. Boasting a palette of warm colors and bespoke furnishings, the apartment’s design incorporates original elements like cement tiles and integrates new aspects like steel beams, creating continuity and harmony throughout.

Initially, the apartment had cement tiled floors with different patterns in each room and a central load-bearing wall. The renovation preserved the historical memory of these elements, integrating them with contemporary interventions to enhance their architectural qualities. Perimeter steel beams and original wooden beams were installed, all hidden inside the false ceiling to ensure structural soundness.

In the living room, the original ceiling height of 3.5 meters was preserved, creating an airy space where natural light, favored by the southwest exposure, takes center stage.

Perfect spatial integration

A long corridor, entirely clad in a warm shade of nutmeg, serves as the central and distinctive element of the project, harmoniously uniting the two apartments. The floors, arranged in an Italian herringbone pattern, alternate with original cement tiles, generating a visual rhythm that interacts with the built-in bookcase and the geometric graphics on the opposite wall.

In the living area, the color palette becomes lighter, complementing the cement rug that defines the dining table space. The ambience is completed by pieces of furniture in powder-blue stained sycamore and the Suoli Ca’Longa table designed by BOATTOMARTINOstudio, which integrates perfectly into the room, combining function and style.

The night area, however, has been designed as a private oasis, with rooms facing the inner courtyard to ensure tranquillity. In the master bedroom, the Cavanella bedside table from BOATTOMARTINOstudio’s Suoli collection adds a touch of functional sophistication, while the children’s bedroom and play area feature bespoke, hand-painted closets that combine craftsmanship and bespoke design.

Through this renovation, the Milanese studio has reaffirmed its personalized approach, integrating architectural tradition with innovative solutions and furniture designed to express the identity of the place and its inhabitants. The project exemplifies a synthesis of tradition and bespoke craftsmanship, creating a harmonious and welcoming environment.
