This project is essentially about rediscovering forgotten and lost spaces. It is a monastery of Poor Clare nuns, a 16th century building that was filled with habitacion after it ceased to be a religious space in 1835. The process of occupation obscured the footprint of the complex to the extent that several habitacion were incorporated into the church itself.

After a process of acquisition of each property by the municipality of Bea de Segura, a process of documentation and study of the existing material realities, both from an historical-archaeological and architectural point of view, began. Once completed, we were able to identify the traces of the original layout of the monastery and thus propose the idea of a volumetric recovery of both the religious space and the adjacent buildings.

When the project comes more from an emptying exercise than an addition, it is the existing elements that define the intervention and the new additions try to emphasise the design character of the original ones. Since all phases leave a mark, the process of unveiling each of the events that took place in these spaces becomes a process of rediscovering history.

Responding to the canonical typology of the monastery, the cloister organised the entire monastic space, creating a void that connected the smaller rooms (refectory, dormitories, kitchens, etc.) with the larger rooms (church, chapter house, de profundis room, etc.). The loss of all the rooms, with the exception of the church, generated a project of voids, a project of absences that would become evident with the volumetric recovery of the cloister. Thus, as if it were an active monastery, everything would turn around a new cloister that would occupy the position of the original and make the absences evident. This corridor, together with the church, would configure a series of voids, of lost rooms, giving meaning to this patrimonial anastylosis that has been the objective of the entire project.

The project, after eliminating the additions in the interior spaces, emphasises and leaves every fossil mark on the walls as part of the monastery’s history. On the outside, an anastylosis is made on the basis of various scattered pieces, recovering part of the volumetry of the ancient cloister that gave access to the church.

The entire process, both the project and the work, took place over a period of more than four years, during which we were able to document, investigate, analyse and agree on the most appropriate solution for the recovery of this heritage space with the various parties involved.
