Dans le Noir is a house located in Lugano, Switzerland, designed by ITCH in 2020. The renovation focuses on expanding outdoor spaces and redesigning interiors. The project emphasizes the connection between the large terrace and interior spaces, creating a usable exterior from spring to autumn.

Scenic Views Define the Design

ITCH designed Dans le Noir, a house in Lugano, Switzerland, that utilizes natural surroundings and interior-exterior connections to create its unique character.

The project entailed a comprehensive renovation of the house above Lake Muzzano, aiming to enlarge the exterior spaces and reimagine the interiors.

Everything revolves around the scenic and theatrical interplay between inside and outside, with the primary focus on creating an outdoor space that’s usable from spring to late autumn.

Flexible Terrace Maximizes Outdoor Enjoyment

A standout feature of the renovation is the terrace, which is divided into two distinct zones for various uses. One area is a more intimate dining space, directly connected to the indoor dining area. The larger section is flexible, designed as a lounge area that can accommodate a pool for kids during the summer months.

A red-brick metal pergola defines the terrace, with curtains that slide to adjust for sun protection according to the time of day and season. In winter, the curtains are removed, leaving the metal structure to frame views of the mountains and lake.

Interior Design Reflects Nature

Within the house, the living room features a bookcase made from black iron and walnut, echoing the tones of the garden and terrace, and a bed in the main bedroom in the same materials silhouetted by the lakeside vista. The children’s bathrooms are more playful, in brightly colored resin, while the parents’ bathroom is more formal and uses marble composite and resin for a traditional feel. The palette throughout the home mirrors the seasons, with cool winter grays, warm autumn tones, and pastel summer shades.

Dans le Noir, a piece by Ben Vautier, hangs prominently in the living room and reflects the thematic relationship between the home’s interior and its natural surroundings.
