Casa 21 is a 240-square-meter apartment designed by Dainelli Studio in Milan, Italy. The interior, set within a historical building, features a refined and contemporary design. The layout includes a living area, a sleeping area, and a study with a guest bedroom. Dainelli Studio carefully preserved original elements while incorporating modern details, such as bespoke furnishings and luxurious materials like Breccia Capraia marble and Italian oak parquet, to create a harmonious blend of history and modernity.
Refined and contemporary design
Casa 21 is a project by Dainelli Studio in Milan, Italy. The interior takes shape in a residential area known for its historic architecture. Dainelli Studio’s aim was to create a refined, contemporary space that would fit perfectly into the building’s historical context.
One of the main objectives was to enhance the interior spaces while preserving the characteristics of the period. The 240-square-meter apartment is divided into three well-defined areas: a living area, a sleeping area and a third area dedicated to a study and a guest bedroom with a bathroom.
Carefully arranged spaces
An entrance hall, with a suspended console and a mirror finished in Gallotti&Radice suede, marks the entrance between the sleeping area and the living area. The arched opening frames the living room, creating a sense of depth and visual continuity. This continuity is accentuated by the herringbone Italian oak parquet flooring, which adds dynamism while maintaining order and symmetry.
The living room is illuminated by natural light coming in through the original windows. Neutral tones are combined with bold decorative elements to achieve a balanced design. A large corner sofa in raw linen, together with the Glee pouf by Lema and the Grace rug by Besana Carpet Lab, create a warm and inviting area.
Decorative boiserie and antique brass sconces by Baxter highlight the walls, contrasting elegantly with the black-stained ash bookcase and antique wood fireplace. A sliding panel in an antique mirror hides the television, ensuring aesthetic coherence.
Classic and modern details
The living room is further enriched with modernist glass and brass tables from the 1970s and a green velvet armchair from the 1950s by Le Sciure On Fire. Decorative objects, paintings and a statue from the Dainelli Studio collection add warmth to the space.
A large opening connects the living room to the kitchen, framing the view of a green velvet table and chairs, illuminated by Emilio Tronconi’s Bamboo floor lamp. The Bolle lamp by Gallotti&Radice, suspended above the table, creates a luminous cascade effect.
In the kitchen, Breccia Capraia marble surfaces with reddish veins dominate the scene, enveloping the worktop and backsplash. The custom-designed island, with Caratos stools from Maxalto, is the heart of the house.
Harmonious blend of history and modernity
The sleeping area also features a dialog between modern design elements and modernist pieces, including the Sacco armchair by Zanotta, a wooden bedside table by Wengè and the Les Grands Transparets mirror by Cassina. The master bedroom and master bathroom are characterized by neutral tones, complemented by Calacatta Macchiavecchia marble, brass details and Gessi Ingranaggio taps.
The guest bathroom, on the other hand, stands out with its Nabila de Tooy wall lamp and Calacatta Viola marble. Every element of Casa 21, from the materials to the furniture, has been carefully chosen to highlight the historic essence of the building.
The design reflects the ambition to integrate natural materials and craftsmanship, resulting in a contemporary and refined aesthetic language. The project incorporates a harmonious blend of history and modernity, creating a unique living space.
