Architecture firm Punto Zero has revamped the interiors of an early 20th-century penthouse in Rome, Italy. Designed in 2024, the refurbishment of Casa Euforia focused on slightly modifying the original layout and using colorful, fluted boiserie to achieve a balance between tradition and contemporaneity.

Punto Zero revisited the floor plan of the penthouse to modifiy rooms and “preserve its spatial organisation while subtly redefining its perception”. The result is a refined interior that “enhances the atmospheres and sophisticated qualities of materials and colors,” according to the architecture firm. “Working on the flooring was technically stimulating, in the rooms where the original terrazzo inlay was missing, we created delicate mosaic borders to frame specific colors for each space,” Punto Zero said of the interiors.

One key feature is the boiserie, which defines the home’s central corridor. Designed in a sugar-paper blue hue, it brings a contemporary touch to the transitional space. A distinctly Roman design detail, boiserie is a type of gypsum panelled wall treatment. Here, Punto Zero has implemented its own version of it as a hallway detail, with wooden opening frames and vertical fluted striped panels.

The narrow corridor opens onto a small home office nook before leading to the living room and an outdoor terrace. “We envisioned the boiserie as a chromatic component in which walnut wood integrated by coloured panels picks up the housing, and as a sculptural feature that, bending, drew an entrance at the centre of the corridor,” Punto Zero said. This boiserie extends into the spacious living room, which sees three original rooms pared down to create a spacious reception area. “The boiserie acts as both a partition and a filter connecting the kitchen,” the studio said of the shared living space. In the same manner, a similar iteration of the boiserie is found in the corridor leading to the bedroom, where it shapes a stunning walk-in closet that doubles as a partition between the sleeping area and the attached en-suite bathroom.

Punto Zero Uses Marble for Custom Furnishings

Thoughtfully designed, the bathroom furnishings were custom-made by Punto Zero. Beautiful marble pieces adorn the master bathroom, where a lightweight metal structure is enhanced by cipollino verde marble surfaces. In the guest bathroom, a single block of onyx was sculpted into a freestanding bathtub, complete with an integrated concealed drawer.

In the master oversized bathroom, the vanity “integrates into a mirrored wall, further enhancing the existing space,” Punto Zero said. Additionally, Punto Zero helped curate the interiors with unique design objects throughout the home.

“Custom furnishings by Punto Zero and prized design pieces are punctuated within the interiors; their sophisticated and dynamic stylistic quality reflects the owners’ interest in contemporary design and atmospheres rich in history,” explained the studio.
